Toll collections through FASTag have increased by almost 20 per cent in the opening three months of the FY2025-26 to about 21,000 crore, so far. This is indicative of an 11 per cent increase over the same period of FY2024-25, namely 17,280 crore, which was received as per figures released by the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) system.
This revenue has been contributed mainly by users nationwide traveling along National Highways (NHs), which shows a stronger presence of long-distance commuter and business traffic in the Indian toll revenue base.
What caused the Toll Collecting spree?
Two points, according to the officials, explain this increase in revenue:
Widespread growth of tollable highways in the nation.
Adjustments to toll user rates are to be made in proportion to the rise in the cost of inflation and the construction of the road.
An increase in the number of toll plazas with more construction and upgradation of highways under the Bharatmala project and other infrastructure schemes has increased the number of road users under the electronic tolling.
Annual Toll Pass May Influence Future Revenues
Although this year's numbers spell good news to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and other road-owning entities, future receipts can be affected by the Annual Toll Pass that the government has just recently announced.
The pass will go live on August 15, 2025, with a price of 3,000 Indian rupees that will enable up to 200 toll plaza crossings, as per toll plaza crossings, which is calculated as single trips or will be valid for 1 year, whichever comes earlier.
This action is aimed mostly at owners of personal cars who can expect simplicity of traffic and understandable costs of tolls. But its widespread implementation may change the toll revenue situation.
What's Next?
With the FASTag still on trend to streamline toll collection and increase its presence, stakeholders believe that revenue collection will also be sustained. This will not be an easy task, as the current user policy changes like the Annual Toll Pass will incorporate the ease of using the facility with constant revenues to maintain and upgrade the infrastructure.
