VinFast, the Vietnamese electric vehicle maker, is preparing for its entry into India by putting its VF6 and VF7 SUV models on public display in Chennai malls. This move builds awareness and lets potential buyers see the cars up close before the official launch later this year.
Strong India Bet and Local Production
VinFast has pledged a major investment of around USD 2 billion for its Indian operations, setting up a CKD assembly plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
Production is expected to begin by mid-2025, starting with VF6 and VF7 models. The plant aims for an initial capacity of 50,000 units annually, with scope to expand based on demand.
VF6 Overview: Compact Electric SUV
The VF6 is a compact electric SUV likely mirroring versions sold in other Asian markets. It measures about 4,241 mm in length and comes in Eco and overseas trims.
The battery pack is around 59.6 kWh, giving an estimated range of roughly 460 km (Plus) –480 km (Eco) under NEDC testing. Power output ranges from about 130 kW (177 PS) to 150 kW (204 PS), with torque figures near 250Nm and 310 Nm.
Inside, expect features like a 12.9-inch touchscreen, head-up display, adjustable seats, artificial leather, and smartphone integration. Safety aids likely include ESC, traction control, blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assist, and a 360° camera.
VF7 Overview: Mid-Size Electric SUV
The VF7 is larger, around 4,545 mm long with a 2,840 mm wheelbase overseas. It usually offers Eco, Plus, and AWD Plus trims. Battery sizes may range from 59.6 kWh in the base to about 75.6 kWh in higher trims.
The range is close to 496 km (Plus) and 498 km (Eco) under NEDC in base or AWD forms. Power output spans roughly 130 kW and 260 kW (354 PS), and torque goes up to about 500 Nm for AWD, delivering stronger performance.
Cabin highlights may include foldable ORVMs, dust filters, rear AC vents, an eight-speaker audio system, plus smart controls (geofencing, OTA updates, voice assistant, navigation, and entertainment options).
Public Showcase Details
Starting June 21, VinFast displayed the VF6 and VF7 at Chennai malls, including popular high-footfall centers, following showcases at events like the Bharat Mobility Global Expo.
Pricing Expectations and Market Impact
While exact India pricing is yet to be confirmed, overseas starting prices are around VND 689 million (₹22.7 lakh) for VF6 and VND 799 million (₹26.4 lakh) for VF7. Local duties, localization levels, and incentives will influence final pricing. Competitive pricing will be crucial, given rivals in the electric SUV space. Early engagement via public displays helps VinFast gauge consumer sentiment and refine offerings.
