At auction, a license plate with the number "HR88B8888" brought in a record-breaking ₹1.17 crore.
It is now officially the most expensive car registration number ever sold in India, with 45 bidders participating.
The car registration plate HR88B8888 sold for ₹1.17 crore on Wednesday in the Haryana government's weekly online auction. The starting price for the bidding was ₹50,000, but the competition grew more intense over the course of the hours. The bid hit ₹88 lakh at midday and ended at ₹1.17 crore at 5 p.m.
Out of the 45 individuals who took part in the auction, this plate stood out from the others.
What made HR88B8888 unique?
The license plate says "HR 88 B 8888." In this case, "HR" stands for Haryana, "88" is the district code or RTO (Regional Transport Office), "B" is the vehicle series, and "8888" is the special four-digit registration number.
Its beautiful pattern is what makes it especially unique and desirable. The plate appears to be a continuous string of the number "8" because of the repeating eighths and "B," which visually resembles an "8" in uppercase.
The number 8 is seen as auspicious and linked to riches and good fortune in many cultures, notably among numerology aficionados in India. This idea probably contributed significantly to the surge in interest and price.
What this reveals about the trend
The rising status of VIP or fancy number plates in India, particularly those with symbolic or numerologically fortunate combinations, is indicated by this record-breaking sale. What was once thought of as a novelty is now becoming into a status symbol. Customers prepared to pay crores for rarity and symbolic significance appear to be driving up demand for unique registration numbers.
Another exquisite plate, "HR22W2222," went for ₹37.91 lakh just last week, which was a significant sum in and of itself.
The next step
The number HR88B8888 will be legally given to a car registered at the appropriate RTO (in this example, under the Kundli series in Sonipat district, Haryana) once the winning bidder deposits the entire sum within five days.
Future auctions of comparable VIP plates may see increased demand as a result of the record transaction. Record bids might continue to be broken as more buyers pursue uncommon number patterns.
