The sales report for September 2025 has been out. With 60,907 unit sales in the passenger vehicle category, Tata Motors surpasses Hyundai and secures second position. Maruti Suzuki continues to lead the Indian automobile market.
On achieving the highest-ever monthly retail sales, the managing director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles said, “The passenger vehicles industry marked a sharp upswing in demand during September 2025, following the rollout of GST 2.0, further buoyed by festive tailwinds. This surge in demand sets a promising tone for sustained growth in the months ahead.”
The top contenders for the September 2025
After the intense fight for the second position, Tata Motors secures the position with 60,907 unit sales, pushing down its rivals: Hyundai and Mahindra.

Tata Motors September Sales, 2025: Category-wise Report
Tata Motors claims a good record of bookings in the latter half of the month, as an after effect of the GST 2.0 price cut. With the sales of 22,500 units, the Tata Nexon became the top-selling model of the brand.
The other models by the brand that maintained the momentum include: Harrier, Safari and Punch. The Harrier and Safari, stimulated by the Adventure X trim, achieved the best-ever combined sales.
The EV and CNG options also record positive results on a YoY basis:

The brand also saw a jump in the sales of commercial vehicles and domestic dispatches. The domestic dispatches by the brand are 33,148 units as against 28,631 units which were recorded a year earlier.

Mahindra and Hyundai records good sales
September has been a great month for Mahindra and Hyundai also. The former reported highest-ever monthly sales when compared on YoY basis, whereas the latter witnessed a highest ever SUV sales.
On MoM basis, Mahindra soar with 42% increase against 39,399 units sales as recorded in August, 2025. The YoY sales report says 10% jump, whereas the SUV sales touches 60% in the first 9 days of Navaratri as compared to the previous year for the same period.

Hyundai slipped from the second position but still managed to stay in the top 4 contenders with a 0.9% increase on the YoY basis. With 18,861 units, Hyundai Creta witnessed best-ever monthly sales.
The after effects of the GST 2.0 price cut and the festive season showed positive impacts for Tata and helped in regain its second position. Till 2024, Hyundai secured this position for a decade. In the months ahead, the auto sales are anticipated to see a great boom with a jump in the overall sales across all the brand.
