After much anticipation, Skoda India has finally confirmed that it will launch its first electric vehicle (EV) by September 2025.
However, the brand has not yet decided which model will make its debut in the Indian market. Initially, the Enyaq iV was expected to be Skoda’s first EV in India, but with new models like the Elroq and Enyaq Coupe, the company is carefully evaluating its options.
Which EV Will Skoda Launch in India?
Skoda’s brand director, Petr Janeba, recently stated that the company is waiting for the finalisation of the revised EV policy in March 2025 before making a decision. The Indian government is expected to offer lower customs duties (15%) on imported EVs if manufacturers invest at least Rs 4,150 crore and set up local production. Otherwise, the import duty remains a steep 70-100%, which could affect pricing significantly.
While the Enyaq iV has been spotted testing multiple times and was showcased at Auto Expo 2025, Skoda is also considering the Elroq, a slightly smaller 4.49-meter-long SUV, as well as the Enyaq Coupe. All three models are based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, which underpins several global electric cars.
Regardless of which model is chosen, Skoda’s first EV will be a full import (CBU), with plans for a locally developed EV platform in collaboration with Volkswagen for future models.
New-Gen Skoda Kodiaq Coming in Mid-2025
While the company finalizes its EV plans, it is also preparing to launch the second-generation Kodiaq in Q2 2025. Production of the new Kodiaq will begin by February 2025, and it will be brought to India as a Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) unit for local assembly.
The current-gen Kodiaq L&K variant is priced at Rs 40.99 lakh (ex-showroom), and the new-gen model is expected to come at a slight premium.
Conclusion
With Skoda finally entering the EV space, it will be interesting to see whether the Enyaq, Enyaq Coupe, or Elroq makes the cut for India. Additionally, the launch of the new Kodiaq will further strengthen Skoda’s presence in the premium SUV market. As the government’s EV policy takes shape, Skoda’s long-term local EV production plans could play a crucial role in making its electric offerings more affordable in the future. Stay tuned for more updates as the brand finalizes its India strategy!
