September 2026 Car Dispatches Seen Up 24% For Festive Season

Passenger vehicle dispatches in September 2026 are estimated at 4.60 to 4.65 lakh units, about 24% higher than a year ago. Makers are stocking dealerships ahead of a later Navratri. Company figures show growth at Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra and JSW MG.

  • Passenger vehicle dispatches are estimated at 4.60 to 4.65 lakh units in September 2026, up about 24% year on year.
  • Navratri starts on October 11 this year, so festive buying has shifted to October.

India's car makers are estimated to have sent 4.60 to 4.65 lakh passenger vehicles to dealers in September 2026. That is about 24% more than the 3,72,458 units recorded a year earlier, which means 88,000 to 93,000 additional vehicles. The industry-wide figure is an estimate from a person familiar with industry numbers, not official data.

Why dispatches are rising

Dispatches are the vehicles companies send to dealers. They are not the same as cars sold to customers.

Dealer stocks were low before the season, so part of the rise is restocking. Retail registrations are estimated at around 4 lakh units. That puts dispatches roughly 59,000 to 65,000 units ahead of retail. This is not an exact measure of unsold stock, since there is a lag between a car leaving the factory and being registered.

Navratri timing matters

Navratri began on September 22 in 2025. This year it starts on October 11. Last September therefore had nine days of Navratri buying, along with the GST cuts that took effect on September 22, 2025. Those cuts lowered tax on qualifying small cars to 18% and moved larger cars and SUVs to 40%.

This September ended during Shraddh, when some buyers put off purchases. Sales from the festive period will show up in October and November, and those months will give a clearer picture of demand.

What companies reported

CompanySeptember 2026Year on year
Maruti Suzuki (total, incl. exports)2,36,013Up 24%
Hyundai (total, incl. exports)77,916Up 10.8%
Tata Motors (PV, incl. exports)70,210Up 15%
Mahindra (domestic PV)64,092Up 14%
JSW MG Motor (wholesale)8,018Up 19%

Definitions differ by company, so the numbers are not strictly comparable.

Maruti Suzuki's utility vehicle sales rose 62% to 78,911 units. Hyundai said September was its highest-ever monthly total. Mahindra said it has crossed 1 lakh billings of its Electric Origin SUVs since launch. JSW MG said it has begun dispatching the Hector Tomahawk EV to dealers, with customer deliveries underway.

What to watch after October

Retail growth is expected to slow to single digits after October, because the year-earlier base rises towards an average of 4 lakh units a month. Cost pressure is another factor. If makers pass it on through price hikes, some buyers may delay purchases or revisit their budgets.

The same person says buyers are taking longer to decide, about 23 to 24 days from enquiry to purchase, against around 19 earlier. This is one person's estimate, not survey data. For dealers, having the right models and variants in stock will matter in October. If festive sales fall short, they could end up with extra stock and place fewer orders.

Inshort…

Car makers sent a lot more cars to showrooms in September, about 24% more than last year, based on estimates. Most of this is dealers stocking up before the festive season. Navratri only starts on October 11, so the real test is how many of these cars get sold in the coming days.
