Mercedes-Benz has introduced its new Electric Drive Unit (EDU 2.0), which will power its upcoming all-electric compact vehicles built on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA).
The new system features an 800V architecture, advanced silicon carbide (SiC) inverters, and a focus on efficiency, performance, and sustainability.
Powerful and Efficient Powertrain
The 200kW EDU 2.0 system includes a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM) located on the rear axle. It also comes with SiC inverters, which boost the system’s energy efficiency. For 4Matic all-wheel-drive models, an additional 80kW drive unit with SiC inverter is installed on the front axle. This setup enhances power delivery while optimizing energy consumption.
Impressive Range and Fast Charging
Mercedes-Benz’s new drivetrain enables a WLTP range of over 750 km (466 miles), making it ideal for long-distance driving. The 2-speed gearbox on the rear axle boosts efficiency and driving performance.
The vehicle can also be charged quickly, thanks to the 800V architecture, allowing for DC fast charging up to 320kW. A 10-minute charge can add up to 300 km (186 miles) of range.
Advanced Battery Technology
The EDU 2.0 is paired with an 85kWh battery that uses advanced silicon oxide anodes, boosting energy density by up to 20%. The system improves the vehicle’s range and energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. The new battery design is integrated into the vehicle’s structure, ensuring better crash safety and thermal management.
Safety and Durability
Mercedes-Benz prioritizes safety with the EDU 2.0. All high-voltage components are designed to meet stringent safety standards, and the battery housing is integrated into the car’s crash safety system. The system also features advanced thermal runaway prevention technologies.
Hybrid Option Coming Soon
Along with the all-electric variants, Mercedes-Benz will introduce a hybrid model of the CLA Class, featuring 48V technology and a new four-cylinder petrol engine. This hybrid will offer up to 140kW (188hp) of output, providing an alternative to fully electric powertrains.
The Electric Drive Unit 2.0 is a major step forward for Mercedes-Benz, combining cutting-edge 800V tech, improved battery technology, and fast charging capabilities. With over 750 km of range and efficient performance, it sets a new standard for compact electric vehicles.
