Mahindra is announcing plans for India's 78th Independence Day to release its groundbreaking New Flexible Architecture for dozens of new products, presenting a family of powertrain options.
Ground-Breaking Multi-Energy Platform to Determine the Future Direction of Mahindra
Announcing its Q4 FY2025 earnings call, Mahindra made a big revelation that it is going to give life to a new SUV platform on August 15, the 78th Independence Day of India. The new platform will be constructed out of Mahindra's world-class, globally benchmarked Chakan factory and is one of the most significant milestones on the Mahindra product roadmap.
Here is what we know so far about this ambitious platform that will give birth to a range of future Mahindra models.
New Flexible Architecture: A Flexible Foundation
The New Flexible Architecture (NFA) will be a game-changer for Mahindra. As a future-proof monocoque platform, it's being designed with unprecedented flexibility to be able to accommodate a range of powertrains.
Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director & CEO, Auto and Farm Equipment Businesses of Mahindra, gave some context on the earnings call when he said: "It is a platform vision. It is not the launch of a product. It is the launch of a new platform and an introduction to the kinds of concepts and products that will come out of it." What this implies is that the August 15 unveil will likely be an NFA concept car and not a production model.
The new Chakan facility will manufacture vehicles on this new platform, and Mahindra expects an annual production capacity of 120,000 units of NFA-based vehicles. This huge investment is an indicator of the significance of the platform in Mahindra's product strategy in the long run.
Next-Generation Bolero Family in 2026
One of the first to be revealed on the NFA platform is the all-new Mahindra Bolero for 2026. This is according to Mahindra's scheduled two mid-cycle refreshes and an all-new model to arrive next year in India.
Worth noting is that the company's Q4 2024 earnings presentation has also included a teaser reference to the launch of an all-electric Bolero EV in 2026, on the same NFA platform. The electric version of Mahindra's utilitarian icon vehicle would be a giant step for a badge that has been famous for rugged diesel-powered capability.
Raising Production Capacity
Off the NFA platform, Mahindra is aggressively expanding its manufacturing footprint to keep pace with increasing demand. The company has scheduled a new greenfield facility that will come on stream in FY2028, augmenting its production capacity.
In the short term, Mahindra will enhance the production capacity of its best-selling vehicles such as the recently launched Thar Roxx and XUV 3XO. The company will boost the production of these vehicles to 3,000 units in FY2026, fulfilling the strong demand in the market and cutting waiting times.
Aggressive Launch Schedule up to 2030
The NFA platform shall be the fulcrum of Mahindra's product surge in the latter half of the decade. Among the 16 new vehicles (9 ICE and 7 EV) Mahindra shall have in its offerings by 2030, four have already hit the road – the XUV 3XO, Thar Roxx, BE 6, and XEV 9e.
This suggests an astonishing pipeline of 12 new passenger models – 7 ICE and 5 EV – yet to be launched in the decade. Certain of these upcoming models will be derived from the highly versatile NFA platform, underlining the platform's pivotal role in Mahindra's product strategy.
The August 15 launch will give a better idea of Mahindra's product direction and technology trajectory. For SUV enthusiasts and automobile observers, the Independence Day launch will be the turning point that will chart the course for one of India's most iconic automobile makers.
