Hyundai's Vision: Small Cars Embracing CNG for a Greener Future

Hyundai is steering its small car lineup towards Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to cater to new car owners and meet environmental standards, ensuring affordability and eco-friendliness.

In recent times, the popularity of small cars has been on a downward trend. However, Hyundai Motor India's Chief Operating Officer, Tarun Garg, believes that these compact vehicles still hold significant value, especially when powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

He sees them as essential for first-time car buyers and fleet operators, while also aiding in adhering to environmental regulations.

The Decline of Small Cars

Over the past few years, the small car segment has seen a noticeable decline. In the fiscal year 2023-2024, hatchbacks constituted 27.6% of the market.

This figure further decreased to 23.2% in the current year. Despite this downturn, Hyundai remains committed to this segment, recognizing its importance for specific customer groups.

CNG: A Game Changer for Small Cars

Tarun Garg points out that small cars are crucial not only for attracting first-time buyers but also for complying with Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms.

He emphasizes the growing demand for CNG variants in models like the Grand i10 Nios, Aura, and the newly introduced Exter. The dual-cylinder CNG technology in these models has been particularly well-received, offering better space utilization and fuel efficiency.

Rising Popularity of CNG Variants

The Grand i10 Nios has seen its CNG variant sales increase from 16% in the first quarter to over 20% in the third quarter.

The Aura's CNG variant is even more popular, accounting for more than 90% of its sales. This trend indicates a clear shift towards CNG-powered vehicles among consumers.

Expanding into Rural Markets

Hyundai is actively enhancing its presence in rural areas, recognizing the growing demand for CNG vehicles in these regions.

By expanding their network, they aim to cater to the needs of rural customers, providing them with affordable and eco-friendly transportation options.

The Bigger Picture: Environmental Compliance

Beyond customer demand, Hyundai's focus on CNG vehicles aligns with broader environmental goals. CNG-powered cars produce fewer emissions compared to their petrol or diesel counterparts, helping the company meet stringent CAFE norms and contribute to a greener future.

Overall, While the small car segment faces challenges, Hyundai's strategic emphasis on CNG variants showcases its commitment to providing economical and environmentally friendly options for consumers. By focusing on CNG technology, Hyundai aims to keep small cars relevant and appealing in the evolving automotive landscape.
