Suzuki has identified a path to reduce vehicle weight by 100 kg by 2030 while meeting safety requirements.
Suzuki is also studying a resin-based CNG cylinder that could weigh around 20 kg, compared with about 60 kg for the steel cylinder used as a reference.
Suzuki has outlined a lightweight engineering programme as part of its Technology Strategy 2026. The company has identified a path to reduce vehicle weight by 100 kg by 2030, while further ideas under study could increase the potential reduction to up to 120 kg.
The plan covers several areas of a vehicle rather than relying on a single change. Suzuki is reviewing vehicle architecture, powertrain components, electrical systems, materials and individual parts to identify areas where weight can be reduced.
The company is also studying how vehicle layout can help manage crash forces. Instead of relying only on additional structural reinforcement, Suzuki is examining deformation space and component positioning to control how crash energy is absorbed.
Engineering safety without adding extra weight
Reducing vehicle weight also requires Suzuki to maintain the required levels of structural strength and crash protection. Instead of relying only on additional reinforcement, the company is studying vehicle layout, materials and individual components to reduce weight.
Key areas being studied include:
Optimised Deformation Space: Suzuki is studying changes to the engine bay layout, including moving the engine slightly forward, to create more space for controlled deformation during a collision. This can help manage crash energy without adding more structural material.
High-Tensile Steel: Suzuki is studying the use of high-tensile and ultra-high-tensile steel in suitable areas. These materials can allow thinner structural sections while maintaining the required strength and rigidity.
Weight Reduction Across Smaller Parts: Suzuki is also examining individual components for small weight savings. For example, reducing the head size of an M8 bolt can save around one gram. With more than 2,000 bolts used in a vehicle, similar reductions across multiple components can contribute to the overall weight-reduction target.
Lighter CNG Cylinders Under Development
Suzuki is also studying ways to reduce the weight of CNG storage systems. The company is developing a resin-based CNG cylinder that could weigh around 20 kg, compared with approximately 60 kg for the steel cylinder used as a reference. This could reduce the cylinder weight by around 40 kg.
The 100 kg weight-reduction target is part of Suzuki's wider approach to reducing vehicle energy consumption while meeting safety requirements. However, the company has not yet announced a specific production model that will achieve the full 100 kg reduction.
