Quad-Motor BMW M Car to “Beat Everything,” JLR Revives Freelander for EVs, and More

In the ever-evolving world of automobiles, manufacturers are continuously pushing the boundaries of technology and performance. Recently, several significant announcements have shaken up the automotive landscape, from BMW's groundbreaking quad-motor M car to Jaguar Land Rover's electrifying revival of the Freelander name. This article dives into these exciting developments and more.

BMW's Quad-Motor M Car: A New Performance Benchmark

BMW is poised to redefine performance with its upcoming M sports car, which is set to feature a revolutionary quad-motor powertrain. Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M, revealed in an interview with Motortrend that this new vehicle aims to "beat everything you have ever seen." While specific benchmarks remain undisclosed, van Meel assured that the car would deliver a driving experience that is "neutral, linear, and predictable."

BMW's ambitious project hints at a vehicle potentially generating up to one megawatt of power—equivalent to a staggering 1341 horsepower—through four electric motors, each powering an individual wheel. This configuration promises unparalleled control and performance, particularly with the sophisticated in-house developed motors that either oil or water will cool to ensure sustained high outputs.

Moreover, BMW is also exploring a twin-motor rear-wheel-drive version of this high-performance car, catering to purists who appreciate the brand's iconic rear-wheel-drive dynamics found in models like the M3 and M4. This variant would likely offer a different but equally thrilling driving experience.

JLR and Chery’s Freelander EV: A New Era for a Familiar Name

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is set to reintroduce the iconic Freelander name, but with a modern twist. Teaming up with Chinese automaker Chery, JLR plans to launch a new range of electric vehicles under this storied nameplate. According to Autocar, these EVs will be sold initially in China, with potential plans for global distribution in the future.

This new venture will operate independently from JLR and Chery's existing product lines, providing a fresh identity while leveraging the Freelander's strong brand heritage. The decision to revive the Freelander name comes as part of a broader trend where legacy automakers collaborate with Chinese firms to expand their electric vehicle offerings. For instance, Volkswagen and Xpeng, as well as Audi and SAIC's IM Motors, are pursuing similar partnerships to enhance their presence in the competitive EV market.

Audi’s High-Performance RS Q6 E-Tron: Power Meets Luxury

Audi is preparing to introduce a high-performance RS variant of its Q6 E-Tron, promising to deliver a significant boost in power and performance. Sources confirm that this electric SUV will generate up to 450kW, positioning it above the already potent SQ6 E-Tron.

Built on the Volkswagen Group's Premium Platform Electric architecture—the same foundation used by the Porsche Macan EV—the RS Q6 E-Tron is expected to share much of its technology and performance attributes with the Macan Turbo. Audi enthusiasts can anticipate exhilarating acceleration, with a 0-100km/h time of approximately 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 260km/h.

In addition to its impressive powertrain, the RS Q6 E-Tron will feature aggressive RS-specific styling cues and a luxurious interior, underpinned by a 100kWh battery pack that offers an estimated range of around 620km (WLTP).

Peugeot’s Updated Partner Van: More Features, Higher Price

Peugeot Australia has announced the arrival of the facelifted petrol Partner van, which will be available from this month. With a starting price of $39,990 before on-road costs, the updated Partner is significantly more expensive—by over $9000—than its predecessor.

The new Partner van is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, producing 96kW and 230Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Notable upgrades include a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch media touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an impressive payload capacity of up to 998kg for the long-wheelbase variant.

Nissan Patrol Warrior 2024: Updated Tech and Off-Road Prowess

In a recent review by Chasing Cars contributor Dylan Campbell, the 2024 Nissan Patrol Warrior was lauded for its enhanced infotainment system and off-road capabilities. The new touchscreen interface brings much-needed modernity to the Patrol’s cabin, while the robust 5.6-litre V8 engine continues to provide a thrilling driving experience.

However, Campbell noted some drawbacks, such as the lack of auto-dimming for the touchscreen at night and the vehicle's high fuel consumption. Despite these concerns, he concluded that the updated Patrol offers significant value, particularly for those who relish its off-road prowess and V8 charm.

Conclusion

These developments underscore the rapid innovation and shifting dynamics within the automotive industry. From BMW’s bold leap into quad-motor performance cars to JLR’s revival of the Freelander in an electric avatar, and Audi’s expansion of its high-performance EV lineup, the future of driving looks exciting and technologically advanced. As brands continue to push the envelope, consumers can look forward to an era where reliability, performance, and sustainability go hand in hand.
