Mercedes-Benz has rolled out a new, more hardcore version of its already larger-than-life G-Wagen. The AMG G 63 Offroad Pro is now on sale in India at Rs 3.80 crore, ex-showroom, and it's built for buyers who want their G-Class to look the part off the tarmac too, not just outside a five-star hotel.
The Offroad Pro sits Rs 6 lakh above the standard AMG G 63, which is priced at Rs 3.74 crore, ex-showroom. That premium buys you AMG-specific hardware rather than just badges, and Mercedes is keeping numbers limited, so this isn't a trim you'll spot at every traffic signal.
What's new on the Offroad Pro
The headline addition is AMG Active Ride Control suspension with active roll stabilisation, essentially technology that keeps the body settled while letting the wheels move independently over rough ground. Paired with it is AMG Active Balance Control, which lets you adjust suspension roll stiffness across three stages depending on the terrain you're tackling.
Then there's AMG Traction Pro, available specifically in the Rock and Sand drive modes. It manages braking torque at each wheel individually and offers seven stages of locking, which in plain terms means better bite when one or more wheels start losing grip.
Visually, you get a professional roof luggage rack with aluminium panels, a removable rear ladder for expedition-style storage, and 20-inch AMG twin-spoke wheels finished in matte black, wrapped in 275/50 R20 tyres. It's a look that says this G-Wagen has actually been off a paved road, even if most owners will keep it firmly on one.
Powertrain and cabin
Under the bonnet, it's business as usual: the familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, producing 585bhp and 850Nm, with the hybrid setup adding a brief power boost under hard acceleration. All-wheel drive is standard via the 4MATIC system, tuned here with the off-road pro controls, and Mercedes claims a 0-100kph time of around 4.3 to 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/hr, which is sufficiently speedy for something this boxy and heavy.
Inside, you still get the 12.3-inch driver display and 12.3-inch MBUX touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Nappa leather upholstery, and the 760W, 18-speaker Burmester 3D sound system. The off-road-specific cockpit view shows vehicle position, compass heading, altitude, steering angle, tyre pressure and temperature, and differential lock status, while a Transparent Bonnet function feeds a camera view of what's under the front wheels. Safety kit includes active brake assist, lane-keeping assist and a 360-degree camera.
