The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin soon and the Tata Curvv becomes the official car for IPL 2025. Much said, a number of cars have had a go with the popular cricket league since the initial few years and here's a list of all cars starting from 2011 till now.
Volkswagen Vento- 2011 and 2012
While IPL started in 2008, its first coming of a car came in 2011 in the shape of the Volkswagen Vento. The compact sedan push was also the official car for IPL 2012.
Furthermore, to add more zest for cricketing fans, the German carmaker also launched the IPL Edition of not just the Vento but the Polo as well. Both cars offered rear entertainment with built-in navigation and connectivity options. It also got IPL edition scuff plates and internal badges.
Maruti Vitara Brezza- 2016 and 2017
The next official car in IPL was given after a gap of a few years in the form of the Maruti Vitara Brezza in 2016. Back then, it was one of the most expensive models in the carmaker's lineup and yet it had taken the market by storm.
Back then, it was only offered with one engine, the 1.3-litre diesel engine producing 90 PS and 200 Nm. From a safety point of view, it was 4-star rated in crash safety from Global NCAP, thus was one of the safest from the manufacturer back then.
Tata Nexon- 2018
Even though Tata Motors was the title sponsor for the cricketing tournament in the year 2022, the Tata Nexon had the honour of being the official partner of the league in 2018.
Launched back in 2017, the car was a Ratan Tata creation sporting an aggressive-looking front end. Offered with either a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine (110 PS/170 Nm) or a 1.5-litre diesel engine (110 PS/260 Nm), it was noteworthy that the electric version of this sub-4m SUV was still under development and eventually came out in 2020 as the Tata Nexon EV.
Just like the Nexon, the Nexon EV grabbed massive attention from the people, which has subsequently made it one of the most fondly revered EVs in the country over the years.
Tata Harrier- 2019
Tata Harrier, which came into the limelight when it was introduced in the year 2019, drew a lot of public attention for its bold and modern looks.
Furthermore, in 2019, the SUV was the official car of IPL. It came with the same 2-litre diesel engine (170 PS/350 Nm) which is the same with the current-spec Harrier.
While the SUV was initially available with a 6-speed MT, Tata also later provided the 6-speed Automatic option in the year 2020.
Tata Altroz- 2020
It's like Tata Motors tried its luck again at the premium hatchback segment with the Tata Altroz, just like what the Tata Indica had done with such success. Along with the compact avatar, the Altroz had a sleek but equally aggressive design.
Notably, this was the edition of the IPL which was held partially in India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to COVID-19, but very successful.
Likewise, the Altroz has launched amid pandemic, and it has welcomed the customers with open arms, clearly about such figures that it has sold and dispatched 50,000 units in a year after coming to the market.
Tata Safari- 2021
Taking on from the Altroz, it was the third-gen Safari, the latest flagship offering of the carmaker, that became the official car in the 2021 edition of the popular cricket league.
Based on the Tata Harrier, this was released in 2021, and the indigenous cricket league witnessed the debut of its 'Gold Edition'.
Contrasting the standard fare, this Gold Edition was embellished with golden accents on grille and headlights as well as door handles and white leatherette seats with gold-coloured piping.
Tata Punch Kaziranga Edition- 2022
This was the year in which Tata became the title sponsor of the Indian Premier league in 2022 and that was also the year which saw Tata Punch being crowned the car of the league title.
However, this was not just another Tata Punch; rather it was the special Kaziranga Edition of the micro-SUV. It was launched as a tribute to the Kaziranga National Park and was also made available on other SUV offerings in the carmaker's range.
The auction was conducted for one unit of Punch Kaziranga Edition and all the proceeds went to conservation of endangered Rhinos inside the national park.
Tata Tiago EV- 2023
This year, Tata Motors, an Indian car giant known for traditional fossil fuel cars, took a very bold step in launching the Tata Tiago EV as the official IPL car towards sustainability. The company claims to increase awareness about electric vehicles available in India.
This official also stated that being associated with the IPL, one of India's greatest events, was key to breaking myths and educating even rural communities about EVs.
Part of this initiative included a pledge by Tata Motors to contribute Rs 5 lakh every time a ball hits the showcased Tiago EV during the tournament, which would go to planting trees in Karnataka's coffee plantations.
Tata Punch EV- 2024
Tata Motors renewed its title sponsorship in 2024 again and gave Punch EV as the official car in IPL 2024 this time. It should also be noted that this EV is the official car for the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 too.
The EV has been presented to an electric striker of the season, which is an award presented to a player with the highest strike rate by the end of the season. Jake Fraser-McGurk, who played for Delhi Capitals (DC), won the car by gathering this title with a strike rate of above.
