Hyundai is gearing up to challenge the growing market presence of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx with its new compact SUV. Codenamed Bc4i, this new sub-4 meter crossover is based on the Hyundai Bayon, which is already available in select global markets. The new Hyundai compact SUV is slated to debut in India during the fiscal year 2027, with an expected price range of Rs 10 lakh – Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, it will compete with models such as the Toyota Taisor, Tata Nexon, and Citroen C3.
Platform and Production
The upcoming Hyundai sub-4 meter SUV will share its platform with the next-generation i20 hatchback. Hyundai’s manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Maharashtra, will serve as the production hub for this new model. With a production capacity of nearly 1 lakh units per annum, this plant will also handle the production of the new-generation Venue, which is scheduled for release in 2025.
Design and Features
The Hyundai Bayon, introduced in 2021 as a replacement for the i20 Active in several global markets, serves as the design inspiration for the new SUV. Positioned between the Venue and Creta in Hyundai’s product lineup, the Bayon features design elements from the Kona facelift, including arrow-shaped headlamps, a unique rear-end theme, and slim DRLs. It also boasts body cladding, a tapering roofline, and faux skid plates at the front and rear.
The interior of the new Hyundai compact SUV will closely resemble that of the i20 hatchback. Expect an all-black dashboard, steering wheel, and switchgear, a 10.25-inch display, and a host of modern features.
Engine and Performance
Globally, the Hyundai Bayon is available with 1.2L petrol and 1.0L turbo petrol engines, producing 84bhp and 100bhp/120bhp respectively. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed iMT. While specific engine details for the India-spec model are yet to be revealed, it is likely to borrow the powertrain setup from the i20 hatchback and the Venue subcompact SUV.
With this new compact SUV, Hyundai aims to capture a significant share of the rapidly growing sub-4 meter SUV segment in India, offering a compelling alternative to the Maruti Fronx and other competitors.
