Every Mid-Size SUV Coming to India and Why the Segment Is About to Get Wildly Competitive

India's mid-size SUV segment is already the country's most competitive automotive battleground, and it is about to get considerably busier. Over the next two years, brands ranging from Hyundai and Kia to Tata, Mahindra, Renault, Nissan, Toyota, and the newcomer JSW Motors are all queuing up with new models, hybrid variants, and full-generation updates that will fundamentally reshape what buyers can choose from.

  • India's mid-size SUV segment is on the cusp of receiving over ten new models and updates from nearly every major manufacturer currently operating in the country.
  • Hybrid and electric powertrains are rapidly becoming the defining technology shift across this segment, with multiple brands preparing electrified variants simultaneously.

India's love affair with SUVs has long since moved past infatuation and settled into something far more permanent. Hatchbacks and sedans, once the bread and butter of the Indian market, are gradually fading into the background as buyers overwhelmingly choose taller, more commanding vehicles.

The mid-size SUV segment sits right at the heart of this shift, and manufacturers are responding with remarkable urgency. Facelifts, new-generation models, hybrid systems, and even entirely new nameplates are all on their way.

Hyundai Goes All-In With Two Models

Hyundai, whose Creta currently leads the segment in sales, is leaving nothing to chance. A third-generation Creta is already in development and testing, with a launch expected in 2027.

A hybrid powertrain is anticipated as part of the package, signalling just how seriously Hyundai is taking the electrification push.

Alongside the Creta, Hyundai is also preparing the Bayon for India, a slightly smaller SUV that would sit below the Creta in the line-up. At around 4.2 metres in length, the Bayon is expected to be localised for India with specific interior touches and a potential CNG option.

Kia Adds a Hybrid to the Seltos

Kia is working on a hybrid variant of the Seltos, which has already proven itself as a global product in markets including the USA, South Korea, and Europe.

For India specifically, a localised hybrid system built around the existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is being considered, with a launch likely in 2027.

Renault and Nissan Arrive as a Natural Pair

Renault India has already stirred considerable excitement with the Duster Hybrid, sold under the E-Tech 160 badge.

Powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine paired with a 1.4 kWh battery, it produces around 160 bhp of combined system output. Bookings opened, filled up rapidly for 2026 production slots, and have since been paused. Nissan will follow with the Tekton, its own C-SUV that is expected to share the Duster's powertrains whilst wearing a distinct design.

Mahindra and Tata Take Electrification Seriously

Mahindra's XUV7XO already leads its price bracket by a healthy margin, but the brand is not standing still. A hybrid version is in the works, with Mahindra reportedly developing both plug-in hybrid and strong hybrid technologies.

Tata Motors, meanwhile, is preparing electric versions of both the Sierra and the Safari. The Sierra EV has been officially teased, featuring a unique fascia and powertrains borrowed from the Harrier EV, including a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. The Safari EV will follow a similar formula and take on the Mahindra XEV 9S directly.

Toyota and JSW Round Out an Already Packed Field

Toyota is bringing the Land Cruiser FJ to India after its debut at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. At 4,670 mm in length, it carries a tailgate-mounted spare wheel and a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, though premium pricing is expected.

JSW Motors, through its tie-up with China's Chery Automobile Co, is preparing two EVs for this segment, the iCar V23 and the Jaecoo J5, both of which have been spotted testing in India ahead of planned assembly at a new facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
