New Lexus ES Debuts with All-Electric and Hybrid Powertrains

Lexus takes its executive sedan into the electric era while maintaining hybrid options. The completely redesigned ES boasts increased dimensions, a minimalist interior with enhanced technology, and four distinct powertrain configurations. With improved ride comfort and quietness, Lexus positions the new ES as a premium mobility solution for diverse luxury preferences.

Unveiled during Auto Shanghai, the latest generation of the Lexus ES sedan features a full redesign, with electric variants complementing hybrid powertrains for the first time in its lineage. The luxury carmaker from Japan emphasized improved ride quality, comfort, and quieter interiors compared to its predecessor, to bestow "first-class comfort for everyone on board" with the new ES.

Expanded Powertrain Portfolio

Such an expansion in power source lineups is almost surreal, considering that the hybrids have made up most of the history of the ES model. The entry-level ES 350e generates 224.3 hp with FWD, while the stronger model ES 550e takes the form of an AWD version, generating 342.6 hp.

Lexus claims impressive clearance ranges, namely 685km for the 350e and 610km for the 550e, under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). Though the battery capacity is not officially stated, it is credible that the ES shares the 77 kWh battery from Lexus' RZ electric SUV. The ES 350e's performance shows a time of 0-100kph within 8.9 seconds, while the 550e scoots that in just 5.9 seconds.

Of course, hybrids keep their importance with two variants working. The ES 300h offers naturally aspirated four-cylinder options for either a 2.0-liter generating 197.1 hp or a 2.5-liter generating 201.2 hp, while the ES 350h offers an enhanced output of 247.4 hp from a 2.5-liter engine.

Both hybrid setups combine eCVT transmissions that send power to the front wheels or all-wheel drive.

Design Evolution

The new ES draws very strong cues from the LF-ZC concept, which is another color of contrast when you look at the visual differentiations of the electric and hybrid versions.

The electric models sport a completely sealed front, while hybrids hold a slim grille, bragging in turn none of the gigantic spindle grille Lexus is so remarkably used to.

New LED headlamps adorn the deceptively simple front, while L-shaped daytime running lamps of the brand have always remained, now also seeing inverted L-shaped turn lenses fitted right below.

The profile demonstrates aerodynamics through flowing body lines and touch door handles. Note that the refinished alloy wheels receiving a two-tone finish, 18 to 21 inches depending on market specifications.

The rear gets its total makeover, complete with connected LED lighting, the first for the ES, with illuminated LEXUS lettering, centralized within this light bar across all powertrain variants. The redesigned rear bumper receives L-shaped lighting elements at both extremes.

Dimensional Growth

In this regard, the new ES grows along all dimensions compared to its predecessor:

  • Length: 5,140mm (+165mm)

  • Width: 1,920mm (+55mm)

  • Height: 1,555mm (+110mm, hybrid) and 1,560mm (+115mm, electric)

  • Wheelbase: 2,950mm (+80mm)

  • Interior Refinement

With the departure from the previous generation, the interior now bears a minimalist style of dashboard design. Most of the controls have been shifted to a larger 14-inch touchscreen that supports over-the-air updates and is complemented by a digital driver display of 12.3 inches.
