New Honda Hybrid SUV May Launch in India by 2026

Honda Cars India is preparing to increase its SUV range with four new models, comprising hybrids and EVs, by FY2026- 27. Of these, the world-wide popular ZR-V hybrid SUV may come as a CBU import by 2026.

As part of its plans to regain steam in the Indian auto industry, Honda Cars India (HCI) has unveiled a plan that involves introducing four new SUVs—hybrid and electric variants included—by FY2026- 27.

One of the highlights among them will be a 7-seater SUV based on a global platform codenamed PF2, which will be launched in 2027. The same platform will also support the next-generation Honda City sedan, further strengthening the brand's long-term local strategy.

ZR-V Hybrid: Possible Contender for India

There is an increasing rumor that Honda might launch the ZR-V, a mid-size hybrid SUV currently available in other markets around the world. If cleared, the ZR-V might arrive in India as a completely built unit (CBU) by late 2025 or early 2026. Although no official word has been given, the launch fits with Honda's premium strategy and hybrid emphasis.

Released worldwide in 2022, the ZR-V positions between the HR-V and CR-V and is sold as the HR-V in the United States and China.

Powertrain and Driving Experience

In the ASEAN markets and in Japan, the ZR-V hybrid is driven by a 2.0L petrol engine and two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery, producing 180 bhp and 315 Nm of torque.

The hybrid powertrain has EV, Hybrid, and Engine drive modes. Transmission is done by an e-CVT gearbox, and hybrid production comes with front-wheel drive (FWD). There is also a 1.5L turbo-petrol AWD model with a regular CVT.

Feature-Rich Cabin and Safety

ZR-V's interior is tuned to match premium rivals, with a feature-packed list that includes:

  • 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system

  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto

  • Wireless phone charging

  • 12-speaker Bose sound system

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

  • Keyless entry and push-button start

  • Leather seats with power adjustment

Safety is complemented by the Honda Sensing suite, including:

  • Adaptive cruise control

  • Lane keeping assist

  • Collision mitigation braking system

  • Road departure mitigation

  • Hill start and descent control

  • ABS, EBD, and vehicle stability assist

Local Production Strategy

To bolster this SUV blitzkrieg, Honda is also set to develop the production of hybrid and EV components locally. This involves investments in new technologies as well as enhancing relationships with suppliers to make it cheaper and thus more desirable for Indian customers to opt for hybrids.

Final Word

Although Honda's Indian plans for the ZR-V remain to be officially announced, the indications are towards a strategic hybrid-driven resurgence. If introduced as a CBU with solid feature support and polished hybrid refinement, the ZR-V can be a game-changer for Honda in India.
