If you are here I wouldn’t be far off in assuming that you just bought a car. The paint is sparkling, that "new car smell" is incredibly fresh and inviting, and you are ready to take her out on the roads. Sorry to pop this rosy bubble but we need to snap back to reality

According to ET infra: “In Northern India, passenger vehicles (Car/Jeep/Van) account for 65% - 70% of total toll transactions due to major suburban commuter belts and urban clusters.”

So whether you like it or not the dreaded toll plaza awaits you. Long queues, searching for exact change, and watching cash or digital balances slip away per trip awaits you.

Thankfully, FASTag revolutionized how we travel on Indian roads starting back in 2019, making automated toll payments a breeze using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

However if you're commuting daily for work, running constant errands, or live right next to a highway, those individual toll deductions add up fast in both time and money. This is exactly where a FASTag toll monthly pass comes into play. If you are tired of watching your wallet balance deplete with every single crossing, you need a smarter strategy.

What is FASTag?

To put it simply, a FASTag monthly pass is a specialized, prepaid subscription option designed specifically for regular commuters who frequently pass through specific toll gates.

Imagine your favorite monthly streaming subscription, but for highways. Instead of paying a standard toll rate every single time you drive through a plaza, you pay a fixed, one-time flat fee upfront. And once you purchase this FASTag pass for a toll, you are granted unlimited (or sometimes a fixed high number of) crossings through that toll plaza for a set period. It is valid for exactly 30 consecutive days from the date of activation.

One of the best parts about this setup is that you don’t need to go out and buy a brand-new RFID tag for your car windshield. The pass links digitally right to your existing, active FASTag account. When you drive through the dedicated toll lane, the overhead readers scan your existing sticker, recognize that you have an active monthly pass, and let you pass seamlessly without deducting any individual per-trip fee from your regular prepaid wallet balance. It simplifies your daily drive, keeps your commute 100% cashless, and lets you skip the anxiety of checking your standard wallet balance every morning.

Who is eligible for a FASTag monthly pass?

So, can anyone grab one of these money-saving passes?

Practically yes, but there are a few simple criteria you need to satisfy to ensure you qualify. The monthly pass is primarily designed as a welfare measure for local residents, daily office goers, and local commercial operators who consistently use a specific toll plaza.

First off, the fundamental requirement is that you must have a valid, active, and KYC-compliant FASTag account mapped to your vehicle.

The required paperwork for KYC for an individual is as follows:

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle
  • Passport-size photograph of the vehicle owner
  • Proof of Identity (any one of the following):
    • PAN Card (mandatory for many banks/issuers)
    • Aadhaar Card
    • Driving Licence
    • Valid Passport (photo page)
    • Voter ID Card
  • Proof of Address (any one of the following):
    • Aadhaar Card
    • Driving Licence
    • Valid Passport (address page)
    • Voter ID Card
    • Ration Card

Moreover, under the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) guidelines, there is a highly popular option called the Local Resident Pass (or Monthly Local Pass).

To be eligible for this specific concession, you must:

  • Reside within a 20 km radius of the specific toll plaza you wish to buy the pass for.
  • Drive a non-commercial, private vehicle (such as a private car, jeep, or van).
  • Provide valid proof of your residential address that matches your vehicle's registration papers.

Do note that while NHAI has rolled out a highly convenient digital local pass system, it is currently active across 121 designated toll plazas across India.

Before you apply, you must verify if the toll plaza on your daily route is included in this list. If you commute through a plaza that isn’t on the digital list yet, you can still apply through traditional offline helpdesks.

How does FASTag monthly pass work?

Once you buy your pass, it is digitally mapped to your vehicle’s registration number and existing RFID tag. This means you do not have to worry about sticking a second tag to your windshield. However, there are a few important rules to keep in mind regarding how this FASTag toll monthly pass operates:

  • Single Plaza Boundary: A standard monthly pass is strictly locked to one specific toll plaza. If you decide to go on a weekend getaway and cross other toll gates along the highway, the pass won't cover them. For those other plazas, the standard toll charges will be deducted from your regular prepaid FASTag wallet balance. Therefore, you must always maintain a healthy minimum balance in your main wallet, even if you have an active monthly pass.

  • No Carry-Over: The pass is strictly valid for 30 days. If you bought a pass that allows up to 50 trips, and you only used 30 of them by the end of the month, the remaining trips are non-refundable and will not carry over to the next month.

  • Managing the Subscription: When your 30 days are up, you will need to perform a FASTag monthly recharge to renew the pass for the next month. While some banks might let you set up auto-debit features, most systems require you to manually purchase or renew the pass each month through your provider's app or portal.

How much does a FASTag monthly pass cost?

You are now probably wondering how much does this cost? And will it really save you any money? The truth is, there isn’t one single, flat rate for all monthly passes across India. The cost of a monthly pass is not standardized nationwide because it depends heavily on the specific toll plaza, the class of your vehicle, and the schemes offered by the toll operating authority.

Having said that, we do have some clear benchmarks for local private car owners:

  • Local Resident Pass Price: For eligible residents living within a 20 km radius of a covered toll plaza, NHAI offers the local monthly pass at an incredibly affordable rate. For this financial year, monthly FASTag pass price ₹350 per month (starting cost). So practically speaking, this means if you pass through a toll plaza twice a day for work, your daily cost drops to just a fraction of the standard toll rate!

  • The Annual FASTag Pass: To give you some context, if you find yourself traveling long distances across multiple states rather than just commuting locally, NHAI also offers an Annual Pass. The price for this annual pass is fixed at ₹3,075 starting from April 1, 2026. The annual FASTag Pass covers up to 200 toll crossings or one year, whichever comes first.

  • Setting Up Your First FASTag: If you are a brand-new car owner and don’t even have a FASTag yet, your initial setup cost with a trusted bank like which will include a tag cost of, a refundable security deposit, and a minimum first-time top-up balance. Once your physical tag is delivered and active, you can then purchase your monthly pass on top of it.

How to get a monthly FASTag toll pass?

Now that we are clear with everything… Let’s see how to get a monthly pass. Getting your hands on a monthly pass is incredibly easy, and you don’t even have to leave your couch if you use the digital methods. Let's look at your options:

Option A: The Digital Way via the Rajmargyatra App

This is by far the easiest and most modern method, perfect for the tech-savvy crowd who wants a hassle-free experience.

Download the App: Install the official Rajmargyatra app from Google Play or the Apple App Store, and sign in using your registered mobile number.

Locate the Service: Navigate to the FASTag services section and select the "Local Pass" or "Monthly Pass" option.

Enter Details: Choose your specific toll plaza and input your vehicle registration number (VRN).

Instant Verification: The app uses consent-based digital integration with government platforms like DigiLocker and VAHAN. It will automatically verify your vehicle details, linked FASTag, and residential address without you needing to upload or mail physical paper documents.

GIS Distance Check: The system uses a GIS-based verification to ensure your registered address is within the required 20 km radius of the selected toll plaza.

Pay & Activate: Review the pass details and make the payment using UPI, credit/debit card, or net banking. Your pass will be digitally linked to your FASTag and ready to go.

Option B: Online via the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) Web Portal

If you prefer using a web browser, you can register through the official portal:

  1. Visit the official IHMCL website and click on "Buy monthly FASTag Pass".
  2. Select your desired toll plaza and complete the CAPTCHA.
  3. You’ll be redirected to the acquiring bank's page where you enter your “Tag ID” or Vehicle Registration Number.
  4. Select your preferred pass scheme, complete the payment, and download your receipt for your records.

Option C: Through Your Bank's App or Website

Most major banks (like SBI YONO, HDFC Customer Portal, or the Bajaj Pay app) have a dedicated section for managing FASTags. You can simply log in, navigate to the FASTag menu, select your toll plaza and duration, and complete your payment directly from your linked bank account or wallet.

Option D: From the Toll Plaza

If you prefer old-school human interaction, or if your toll plaza isn't covered by the digital app system yet, you can buy it physically:

  1. Drive up to the dedicated helpdesk or Point of Sale (POS) cabin at your frequent toll plaza.
  2. Hand over copies of your documents: your Aadhaar Card, Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC), and Proof of Address.
  3. Pay the upfront fee via cash, card, or UPI, and the executive will instantly link the pass to your tag.

Tips for a smooth toll journey

If you’re a daily commuter across tolls then a FASTag monthly pass is a must have for you. And to avoid any hiccups keep the following things in mind:

  • Keep Your Address Updated: Since eligibility for the local resident pass is verified digitally against your registered address, make sure your address on VAHAN, DigiLocker, and your bank profile matches exactly. If you relocate, notify your bank immediately to update your registered address.

  • Never Go to Zero: Always keep a buffer of a few hundred rupees in your main FASTag wallet. If you ever have to take an unexpected detour through a toll plaza not covered by your monthly pass, you'll need that cash in your wallet to avoid being blacklisted or paying double in the cash lane.

And we’re done! You are now fully equipped to conquer your daily commute without burning a hole in your pocket.

FAQs- FASTag Monthly Pass

I'm planning a weekend road trip. Will my local monthly pass work at other tolls along the highway?

No, your monthly pass is strictly a one-toll-plaza-only deal. The pass is locked to the specific plaza you selected when you bought it. The moment you cross other toll plazas on your road trip, the scanners will deduct the standard toll rates directly from your main FASTag wallet balance.

I live right next to a highway toll plaza (within 20 km). Do I get some kind of "neighbour discount"?

Yes! If you reside within a 20 km radius of an eligible toll plaza and qualify for a highly discounted Local Resident Pass.

I barely drove this month and have unused trips left on my pass. Can I carry them over to next month or get a refund?

Sadly, no. It’s a strict "use-it-or-lose-it" system. The monthly pass is valid for exactly 30 consecutive days from the date of activation. Once those 30 days are up, the pass resets. Any unused trips are completely non-refundable and will not carry over to your next month.

I’m in the military/defense services. Am I exempt from paying tolls when driving my personal car for a family outing?

No, personal trips in private cars are not exempt. While emergency vehicles and on-duty, official military/paramilitary vehicles get a full toll exemption, the rules are very clear about personal travel. If you are serving in the defense forces or government and are driving your personal, private vehicle for private travel, you must pay the standard toll fees.

My FASTag got blacklisted! What does that mean, and how do I unblock it?

It usually just means your wallet balance fell too low (in most cases). Don't panic! A tag is typically blacklisted because your account balance went below the minimum threshold or slipped into a negative balance. All you have to do to unblock it is recharge your FASTag wallet or you can quickly connect with the customer service team and share your concern with them.

Is there any way to get a local resident pass without standing in a sweaty line at the toll plaza office?

Yes, you can do it completely online using the Rajmargyatra app. If your plaza is on the list of eligible ones, you can apply directly through the Rajmargyatra app. The app integrates with government platforms like DigiLocker and VAHAN to digitally verify your address and vehicle details.
