Safety has quietly become the easiest thing to find in a budget car and the hardest thing to verify. The badge is everywhere. The fine print is where it gets interesting.
This guide ranks every current Bharat NCAP 5 star car that starts below Rs 10,00,000 ex-showroom, using the official crash-test scores. It also shows where the badge can mislead you.
What the stars actually measure
Bharat NCAP is India's government-backed crash-test programme, opened to carmakers on 1 October 2023. It is voluntary. A car with no rating is not automatically unsafe, it just has not been through this programme, which is why this list says "safest tested", not "safest on sale".
Three tests drive the score: a frontal offset crash at 64 km/h, a side impact at 50 km/h and a side pole test at 29 km/h. Adult protection is scored out of 32. Child protection is scored out of 49. A 5 star car also needs electronic stability control, curtain airbags, pedestrian protection and seat-belt reminders as standard.
One thing to keep in mind: these are points, not percentages. A gap of 0.27 of a point between two cars is less than 1% of the adult score. Do not read it as a big difference in the real world.
How we ranked them
Cars were ranked by adult protection score, with child protection as the tie-breaker. "Under Rs 10 lakh" means a starting price strictly below Rs 10,00,000 ex-showroom, which is before registration, road tax and insurance. Your on-road price will be higher, and it varies by state.

The seven, ranked
1. Hyundai Venue
The Venue posts the highest adult score here, 31.15 out of 32, with a perfect 16.00 in the side test. But it leads the Punch.ev by just 0.06 of a point, so treat that as a tie, not a victory.
Where it slips is child protection. At 44.46, it trails the 45.00 scores of the Punch.ev, Kylaq and Punch. The base HX 2 is covered by the rating, but Level 2 ADAS (camera and radar driver-assist features) is reported only on the top HX10 trim.
2. Tata Punch.ev
Here is a combination that is hard to ignore: 31.09 for adults, 45.00 for children, and an electric drivetrain. The catch is the price. At Rs 9.79 lakh after a September 2026 revision, it leaves only Rs 21,000 of room under the cutoff.
Tata's own page quotes about Rs 9.69 lakh, which may predate the hike. Confirm the figure before you plan around it. The tested cars were higher trims, and the base SMT 30 is covered by extension.
3. Skoda Kylaq
If you carry children, start your test drives here. The Kylaq matches the best child score of 45.00, gives up only 0.27 of a point to the Venue on adult protection, and costs Rs 40,900 less. It also comes with a four year or 1,00,000 km warranty and a 446 litre boot.
One warning. The Classic, Signature, Signature+ and Prestige trims are in the rating table. The newer Classic+ and Sportline are not. Ask Skoda before assuming they share the badge.
4. Tata Punch
Rs 5.69 lakh. That is the cheapest 5 star ticket in the country, and it still scores 30.58 for adults and 45.00 for children.
The frontal result is its softer spot at 14.71 out of 16, though the side score is a strong 15.87. The tested cars were CNG variants, and the rating extends to the base Smart petrol manual. The rating applies from January 2026 onwards, so check the build month.
5. Maruti Suzuki Brezza
The Brezza earns a perfect 16.00 in the side test and 30.41 overall. Its child score of 43.00 is the lowest in this group, mostly because of a 7.00 out of 13 vehicle assessment.
So who is it for? A buyer who values Maruti's service network and a strong side result, and who does not mind giving up two child points to the leaders. Prices differ slightly between listings (Rs 7.40 lakh and Rs 7.50 lakh both appear), so get a written quote.
6. Kia Syros
The Syros is the most feature-rich non-electric car here, and it has a perfect side score. Its frontal score of 14.21 is the lowest in the seven, which is why it sits sixth. Kia says every variant has six airbags, and the lower HTE trim was added to the rating in April 2026.
Kia also mentions Level 2 ADAS on the top trim. The feature list was inconsistent when we checked, so verify the exact variant before paying for it.
7. Tata Altroz
Seventh does not mean weak. The Altroz is the cheapest 5 star hatchback at Rs 5.99 lakh, with the best frontal score in the group (15.55) and a child score of 44.90.
The side result is the soft spot. At 14.11 out of 16, it is the lowest here. If the rear seat carries people regularly, the Punch or Kylaq is the safer call.
Just missed
More cars qualify like the Tata Curvv. It scores 29.50, which would put it eighth, but its listed base price is exactly Rs 10,00,000. That is not below the cutoff, so it stays out..
Moreover, pricier cars are stronger on paper. The Maruti Victoris scores 31.66 but starts at Rs 10.50 lakh, and the Nissan Tekton and Renault Duster score 30.49 from Rs 10.49 lakh. Stretch the budget by a lakh or so, and the order changes.
Read the fine print before you book
A rating belongs to a variant and a build period, not to a model name. The crash-tested cars are often higher trims, and the rating reaches cheaper ones through a manufacturer's declaration that the structure and safety equipment are unchanged. That is a fair basis, but it is not the same as crashing every variant.

Test your child seat in the car you plan to buy.
Confirm the trim if you want ADAS. It is not standard on the base variants here.
Also remember what the stars leave out. They do not measure driver-assist features, visibility, reliability or repair costs. A 5 star car protects well once a crash happens. It does not tell you how likely you are to avoid one.
A Final Word
If your budget is tight, the Punch is the clear starting point: the lowest price, a 5 star rating and the best child score on the list. If you carry children and can stretch, the Kylaq is the strongest all-round value. If adult protection is your single priority, the Venue edges it, by a hair.
Whichever you pick, pay for the variant the crash test covers, not the one the brochure photographs.
