When buying a car you must have experienced this… the salesperson taps the brochure and says "six airbags, standard."
You nod, relieved. Then you read the fine print and find that "standard" meant the top two trims. It happens. And it is the reason this list looks different from the usual roundup.
Why the airbag count is still your problem
India toyed with a six-airbag rule for years. The road transport ministry approved a draft in January 2022, then pushed the deadline to October 2023, citing supply-chain limits. Then the plan changed.
Nitin Gadkari said Bharat NCAP, the government's crash-test programme, would demand six airbags for a 4 or 5 star rating, so a mandate was no longer needed. Bharat NCAP launched on 1 October 2023. On 24 July 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea to force a mandate, calling it a policy matter.
So airbags became a selling point, not a legal floor. Some carmakers fit six in every variant. Others keep them for top trims. You have to check the exact variant you are buying.
How we picked the six
Four filters. Six airbags standard on every variant. A crash-test result where one exists. A top variant under about Rs 11 lakh. And a family-friendly body with decent certified mileage.
Some cheaper cars with six airbags, such as the Alto K10, Eeco, Celerio and Wagon R, were left out too. None has an independent crash score, which matters when the goal is a family car.

Maruti Dzire: the all-rounder
If you want one car and no drama, start here. The Dzire scored 5 stars for both adult and child protection at Bharat NCAP, with 29.46 out of 32 for adults and 41.57 out of 49 for children (petrol variants, from June 2025).
Maruti states six airbags across all variants, along with stability control, hill hold and ISOFIX mounts.
Then there is the fuel bill. The CNG-AMT, launched on 18 September 2026 from Rs 8.53 lakh (festive price), is certified at 36.47 km/kg. That is the best figure in this list. CNG is sold by weight, which is why it is quoted in km/kg and not kmpl.
The catch? It is a five-seater.
Maruti Baleno: the freshest feature list
The Baleno got a facelift on 5 September 2026 with Level 2 ADAS (camera and radar features such as adaptive cruise control that assist the driver but do not drive the car), a new 1.2-litre Z12E petrol engine and ventilated front seats. Six airbags are standard, and it starts at Rs 5.99 lakh.
Now read this part slowly. The Baleno's 4 star adult and 3 star child result (26.52 out of 32 and 34.81 out of 49) applies only to the six-airbag versions. The two-airbag versions have a separate sheet, scoring 24.04 out of 32. And the facelift is not yet in Bharat NCAP's list, so the rating formally covers the older car. Buying a used 2022 to 2025 Baleno? Confirm which version you are looking at.
Tata Punch: the cheapest five-star entry
Rs 5.75 lakh. That is the lowest starting price here, and on the evidence we checked, the lowest among cars that pair six airbags with a 5 star Bharat NCAP result. The scores are 30.58 out of 32 for adults and 45.00 out of 49 for children, listed from January 2026. Six airbags come on every variant, base car included.
The trade-off is fuel. Certified petrol mileage is 18.8 to 20.09 kmpl, and instrumented testing of the AMT showed 10.7 kmpl in the city and 16.9 on the highway. There is also no diesel or turbo option.
Tata Altroz: the five-star hatchback
Two Tatas make the list, and this is the second. The Altroz scored 29.65 out of 32 for adults and 44.90 out of 49 for children, 5 stars in both, with a June 2026 revision extending the rating to more variants. Six airbags are standard across variants.
Fuel economy is the weaker side. The CNG manual is certified at 27.8 km/kg, behind the Maruti CNG numbers. For petrol, we found no ARAI figure published, so treat running costs as unproven.
Honda Amaze: the sedan with Honda Sensing
The Amaze is the priciest way into this list at Rs 7.74 lakh, and its mileage (18.65 to 19.46 kmpl) is not the reason to buy it. The case is the safety package: 5 stars adult and 4 stars child at Bharat NCAP (28.33 out of 32 and 40.81 out of 49), six airbags even on the base V trim, and Honda Sensing, its ADAS suite, on higher trims.
Renault Triber: the seven-seater, with a big asterisk
A large family? The Triber is the only seven-seater here, and six airbags are standard even on the entry trim. It also has the biggest caveat in this article.
It has no Bharat NCAP rating. Its 4 star adult Global NCAP result dates from 2021 and covers the earlier car, tested with two airbags. Nobody has crash-tested today's configuration. The six airbags are a real improvement, but the rating does not carry over.
A turbo-petrol (100 PS, 180 Nm, claimed 21 kmpl) arrived on 28 September 2026 from Rs 7.84 lakh. Sources disagree on whether the CNG kit is factory-fitted or added at the dealer, so ask before you book.
A Final Word
There is no single winner, but there is a sensible order. For the cheapest five-star entry, the Punch. For the best mix of safety and mileage, the Dzire. For a five-star hatchback, the Altroz. Pick the Amaze if you want a sedan with ADAS and can pay more, the Baleno for the newest features, and the Triber only if seven seats are non-negotiable and you accept the missing rating.
