Knowing the FASTag toll charges before a highway journey can help you plan your travel costs and avoid payment issues at toll plazas. The amount deducted depends on the toll plaza, vehicle category and route. FASTag simply makes this payment automatic through the account linked with it.

What are FASTag toll charges?

FASTag toll charges are the toll or user fees deducted electronically when a FASTag-enabled vehicle crosses a toll plaza. The toll amount is not a fixed FASTag fee; it is based on the applicable rate for that plaza and vehicle category. FASTag uses RFID technology to identify the vehicle and deduct the applicable amount from the linked account.

How are FASTag toll plaza charges calculated?

The FASTag toll fee depends mainly on the toll plaza, vehicle class and highway or road stretch. Different plazas can have different rates because user fees are determined by factors such as the project stretch, structures, highway width and applicable fee rules. This is why there is no single nationwide FASTag toll rate for cars, buses or trucks. NHAI displays the applicable user fee at toll plazas and provides online tools to check rates for specific journeys.

How FASTag payment works at national toll plazas

Your FASTag payment uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology attached to your vehicle windshield.

As your vehicle approaches an active lane: 1. Overhead RFID readers scan your tag code. 2. The system checks your tag status and wallet balance. 3. The applicable FASTag toll fee is automatically deducted from the linked account. 4. The barrier opens, and an SMS alert about toll charge deduction is sent to your registered mobile number.

What if your FASTag does not have enough balance?

An insufficient balance can prevent a normal FASTag transaction from being completed. NPCI advises users to maintain adequate funds in the account linked to their tag. A FASTag with insufficient balance may get blacklisted if funds are not added to it for a long time.

Before a long trip, check your balance and recharge if required. This simple step can help avoid payment problems at toll plazas.

Toll penalties: Paying double at toll booths

If you enter an electronic toll lane without an active tag or with insufficient balance, you face severe penalties under NHAI rules.

  • Non-FASTag Entry: Vehicles entering dedicated electronic lanes without a working tag must pay double the toll fee for that plaza.
  • Low Balance Warning: If your tag balance falls below the minimum threshold, it gets blacklisted, forcing you to pay double in cash.

FASTag annual pass and its charges

Frequent users of national highways can also consider the FASTag Annual Pass if they meet the eligibility requirements. For FY 2026–27, NHAI revised the Annual Pass fee to ₹3,075, effective from April 01, 2026.

The pass is available for eligible non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and provides benefits for up to 200 toll plaza crossings or to one year, whichever comes first, on eligible National Highway and National Expressway plazas.

The Annual Pass is separate from the regular FASTag toll system and is useful mainly for frequent highway travellers.

How to keep your FASTag payment smooth

A few simple checks can prevent most FASTag payment issues during a journey:

  • Keep sufficient balance in the linked FASTag account.
  • Make sure the FASTag is properly fixed to the vehicle's windscreen.
  • Keep the tag active and compliant with applicable KYC requirements.
  • Check SMS or account alerts after toll transactions.
  • Recharge before starting a long highway journey.

FASTag toll charges are based on the applicable toll plaza, vehicle category and route rather than one fixed FASTag rate. You can check the exact fee for your journey through NHAI's toll information services and keep sufficient balance for automatic payment.
