Xiaomi YU7: Expanding Horizons in Electric Mobility
Xiaomi has officially revealed its second electric vehicle, the YU7 SUV, a larger sibling to the SU7 sedan. Marking Xiaomi's entry into the competitive SUV segment, the YU7 is poised to take on formidable rivals, including the Tesla Model Y. Slated for launch in China by July 2025, Xiaomi plans to focus on its domestic market for the first few years before considering exports.
Design and Dimensions: Bigger Than the Tesla Model Y
The YU7 SUV retains the 3,000mm wheelbase of the SU7 sedan but boasts larger overall dimensions, measuring 4,999mm in length, 1,996mm in width, and 1,600mm in height. These metrics make the YU7 longer, wider, and slightly shorter than the Tesla Model Y. The design borrows heavily from the SU7, featuring a blanked-off grille, teardrop-style LED headlights, and sleek, flush pop-up door handles.
However, distinct SUV cues such as black wheel arches and a redesigned alloy wheel and rear tail light section set it apart.
The swoopy crossover-inspired design is reminiscent of the Ferrari Purosangue, with muscular haunches and plastic cladding adding to its robust SUV aesthetic. A signature roof hump suggests advanced LiDAR-based driver assistance systems, emphasizing Xiaomi’s focus on technology integration.
Powertrain and Performance: A Dual-Motor Powerhouse
The Xiaomi YU7 packs a punch with its dual-motor configuration – a 299hp front motor and a 392hp rear motor – generating a combined output of 691hp. Despite its 2,405kg kerb weight, the YU7 achieves an impressive top speed of 253kph. Comparatively, the lighter SU7 Max variant hits 265kph with a slightly lower power output of 673hp.
Battery Technology and Range
Xiaomi has partnered with Tesla’s battery supplier, CATL, for the YU7’s power solutions. While the exact capacity of the YU7’s battery remains undisclosed, it is expected to feature the same 101kWh NMC battery as the SU7. This pack delivers up to 830km of CLTC range in the sedan but will likely offer slightly less in the heavier SUV.
Xiaomi’s Strategic Launch Plans
Xiaomi aims to cater to China’s burgeoning EV market before exploring international opportunities. Although the SU7 sedan was showcased in India earlier, the company has no immediate plans for a vehicle launch in the country.
