Citroen C5 Aircross To Be Transformed Into Indias First Friction Tester At The Bengaluru Airport

Citroen C5 Aircross to be transformed into India’s first friction tester at the Bengaluru Airport

If you've ever spotted a yellow SUV racing down an airport taxiway or runway, then it was probably a friction test car. These vehicles are equipped to help keep runways safe. Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru is the first in India to introduce a locally manufactured friction tester, on the lines of the Citroen C5 Aircross SUV.

Indian airports have thus far used imported friction testers predominantly. For instance, Cochin International Airport uses Volvo V90, and earlier years saw the use of Saab 9-5 wagons as the common sight for this purpose. The cars were imported from foreign companies, and therefore the new development at Bengaluru is a big change.

Modifications done in the original car for the job

The new Citroen C5 Aircross is not an ordinary SUV. It has been equipped with specialized equipment to gauge the amount of grip present on the runway. A deployable wheel - the same as used in flying - is a component of the equipment to gauge the levels of traction.

When wet testing, a nozzle system sprays an adjustable 1mm of water across the tarmac, supplied by a 700-litre onboard water supply. This kit is employed in order to reproduce rainy landing conditions.

The SUV also has room for a variety of electronic gear and monitors, as well as a temperature sensor to monitor heat levels on runways. The spacious cabin of the C5 provides room for all this equipment to be accommodated without at all compromising functionality.

Why is runway friction testing important?

Friction tests are essential in the provision of safe flights. A runway that is too slippery, especially during rain, may cause loss of control or increased braking distances. The tests, conducted at the speeds of 65 km/h and 95 km/h, yield data related to runway grip graded under three levels: Good, Medium/Fair, and Poor.

A friction level of 0.5 or more is typically acceptable. Less than that may prompt warnings using NOTAMS (Notice to Airmen) and may lead to remedial steps such as washing or rubber stripping.

Conclusion

The evolution of Citroën C5 Aircross into India's first indigenously produced friction tester is a milestone for aviation safety at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport. By substituting imported models with a locally adapted alternative, the airport is not only promoting technological autonomy but also increasing runway safety. Fitted with specialized measuring equipment, in-board water spray equipment, and monitoring devices, this specially adapted SUV is a key factor in providing the best landing conditions, especially in poor weather. As increasing numbers of airports in India embrace these innovations, the prospects for runway safety are looking increasingly strong and efficient.
