How to transfer ownership of a vehicle with the regional transport office

Transferring ownership of a vehicle would entail changing the title of the vehicle from one owner to another or changing the owner of the vehicle from your name to the buyer's name. According to the Indian law's Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, ownership transfer is required. A person must possess all necessary documentation for their automobiles, such as insurance, a driver's license, a vehicle registration card, etc., following the Indian Motor Vehicle Act. A vehicle registration card indicates a person's ownership of the vehicle.

Procedure for Transferring Ownership of a Vehicle With The Regional Transport Office

RTO (Regional Transport Office) has many protocols for various circumstances to ensure efficient operation. On the mParivahan website, one can finish the car's ownership transfer process online. Adhere to these quick and easy instructions for a trouble-free vehicle transfer process.

Ownership transfer in the event of a typical sale

When a car owner sells their vehicle to another individual, it is referred to as a normal or regular sale. The ownership and RC of the car must therefore be transferred to the new owner. The transferor must give the RTO Form 29 to accomplish this. Within 14 days of the vehicle transfer, the transferee must file Form 30 to the RTO. Taxes and fees must be paid as required.

Transfer of ownership if the car owner passes away:

When a car owner passes away, ownership of the vehicle will be transferred to the legal heir by applicable laws. Within 30 days of the decedent's passing, the legal heir must notify the RTO of the death and express a desire to utilize the vehicle. In a sense, the individual can use the car for three months just like a proprietor.

Transfer of ownership of a car bought in a public bidding process:

Within 30 days following the sale, the buyer of the sold vehicle must file Form 32 to the RTO ownership. It is necessary to pay the fees and taxes outlined in The Central Motor Vehicle Rules.

Reasons for Transferring Vehicle Ownership

There are several possible causes for changing a vehicle's name, some of which include:

Public Auction

The new owner must ensure that all vehicle name transfer procedures are duly performed if the vehicle is sold at auction to settle any obligations.

Selling off the car

If you're selling your car or any other vehicle, you must transfer ownership into the purchaser's name. The transfer of vehicle ownership enables the RTO to enter information about the new owner into its database.

Owners death

The departed's legal inheritor shall become the car's new owner in cases where the owner has stepped down. However, the inheritor will need to apply to change who owns the car.

Documents Needed to Transfer Car or Bike Ownership

Here is a list of other obligatory documents to transfer car ownership to the regional transport office. Forms 1, 2, 29, 30, 31, and 32 must be submitted to the relevant RTO along with the application for the transfer of vehicle ownership.

  • Passport size photo
