Zero Tolerance: Dehradun RTO on License Cancellation for Traffic Offenders

Steps Towards Zero Tolerance: Immediate Cancellation of Licenses for Drunk Drivers and Increased Finances for Hazardous Driving Behavior by the Transport Department of Dehradun. The complete enforcement vision is drawn by RTO Enforcement Officer Shailesh Tiwari as a response to the alarming total of doubtful driving challans, which amounted to 6,761 in 2024. Besides differentiating permanent bans for repeated offenses, this progressive penalty scheme covers every part of hazardous moving from speeding to chats while driving.

The unprecedented move in the Dehradun Transport Department's efforts to control dangerous driving practices that endangered public safety has now been rolled out. A comprehensive enforcement against traffic violations has been announced by RTO (Enforcement) Shailesh Tiwari, with the immediate cancellation of driver's licenses for drunk driving incidents as the focal point of new action.

The tougher approach of the department, which is capturing multiple dangerous driving behaviors such as overspeeding, driving recklessly, using mobile while driving, and red light jumping, would lead to license suspension for offenders at the first instance and permanent DL cancellation for further violations with massive fines imposed on them. This is the gradual punishment system that shows the department's affirmative attitude to reducing road safety risks.

Statistics, however, show the magnitude of the problem. Only in 2024, it was recorded that 6,761 vehicles were challaned for dangerous driving. However, even after action has been taken against many offenders, including several who received their licenses suspended for three months, hardly any number of violators abide by the traffic rules. This will tighten the penalties for such recalcitrants.

"We are now moving ahead with tougher measures than issuing challans," said RTO-Enforcement Shailesh Tiwari.

This is amply demonstrated by the immediate cancellation of driving licenses under drunk driving as well as with zero tolerance for behavior that has public safety at risk. This intensified enforcement would signal the greater commitment of the Transport Department to safer roads in Dehradun through stricter regulation.
