Toyota Hyryder launched at Rs 15.11 lakhs

Toyota has unveiled the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, its first midsize SUV, with prices beginning at Rs 15.11 lakh and rising to Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Only the prices for the top four variants—the strong hybrid variations and the highest-spec mild hybrid AT variant—have been released by Toyota thus far. Prices for the other mild-hybrid varieties will be revealed gradually.

Reservations for the new SUV are already being accepted for a nominal fee of Rs 25,000. The Grand Vitara, a midsize SUV manufactured by Maruti, is also anticipated to go on sale soon.

The Hyryder's thin double-layer Daytime Running Lights, which seamlessly integrate into the "Crystal Acrylic" grille from the front, is the most distinctive feature. Slim C-shaped tail lights with dual C-shaped LED components to extend into the tailgate. Toyota offers the Hyryder in four dual-tone and seven single-tone exterior paint colours.

The Hyryder’s dashboard is similar in layout to recent Maruti Suzuki and Toyota models like the Baleno, Glanza and the new Brezza. Toyota has gone for a black and brown theme for the interior, which looks refreshing and is a more practical alternative to the usual beige. However, the brown and black combo is offered only with the strong hybrid powertrain. The mild-hybrid models will get an all-black interior theme instead.

The mild-hybrid technology will be standard across the entire range of the Hyryder's four trim levels: E, S, G, and V. There are two engines available for the Hyryder. While the powerful hybrid is available on the S, G, and V trims. The top-tier V trim is the only one to have AWD.

A panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and other goodies come standard on the Hyryder's highest specification.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is the first to have powerful hybrid technology for a midsize SUV. It is equipped with an eCVT gearbox and Toyota's 1.5-liter TNGA Atkinson Cycle engine, which has 92 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque. The engine is coupled with an electric motor with a combined output of 114 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque.

According to Toyota, the robust hybrid power plant boasts a claimed fuel economy of 27.97kpl and receives a 177.6V lithium-ion battery.

Maruti Suzuki will also provide a mild hybrid powertrain for the Hyryder. It is powered by the same 1.5-litre K15C engine found in the new Brezza, XL6, and Ertiga models. The 103 horsepower and 137 Nm torque "Neo Drive" motor is mated to either a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox or a 5-speed manual gearbox.

AWD is an option for the mild hybrid powertrain mated to the 5-speed manual transmission. It is now the sole SUV in its class to offer AWD while not being the first midsize SUV to do so (the now-discontinued Renault Duster had an AWD option for a period).
