Why Lok Adalats Matter

Recurrence of the success of the Telangana Lok Adalat indicates the increasing relevance of these forums in the Indian justice system.

Among the major benefits, it is possible to mention:

  • No Court Fees: Cases taken up at Lok Adalats do not involve court fees, and if already paid in regular courts, fees are refunded upon settlement.

  • Speed and Flexibility: Proceedings are informal, bypassing rigid procedural laws, leading to faster resolutions.

  • Binding Awards: Decisions given by Lok Adalats are final and cannot be challenged in higher courts.

  • Relieving Court Burden: By resolving lakhs of cases in one day, Lok Adalats significantly reduce the pressure on conventional courts.

A Step Towards Accessible Justice

The Telangana Lok Adalat exemplifies the ability of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to provide a good resolution to justice to citizens in a timely and cost-effective, and binding manner. Such initiatives have proven that Lok Adalats should be reinforced as an alternative avenue of justice, with lakhs of disputes settled after a day.
