Summer Car Care 8 Tips To Protect Your Vehicle From Extreme Heat

Summer Car Care: 8 Tips to Protect Your Vehicle from Extreme Heat

With several parts of India experiencing heat waves, it's essential to take extra measures to protect your vehicle from the scorching sun. High temperatures can negatively impact your car's performance and longevity. Here are eight tips to ensure your car stays in top condition during the hot summer months:

1. Keep the Cabin Cool

  • Shade Parking: Always try to park your car in the shade to prevent the interior from heating up excessively.

  • Cross-Ventilation: If shade isn't available, keep the windows slightly down to allow cross-ventilation. Ensure the windows are not rolled down too much to avoid security risks.

  • Sun Shades: Use sun shades on all windows, including the rear, to block direct sunlight and reduce cabin temperature.

2. Get Your AC Serviced

  • Regular Maintenance: The AC system should be checked by a qualified technician for coolant leaks, dust, and dirt buildup. Ensure the compressor oil is topped up regularly.

  • Efficient Cooling: If the AC takes too long to cool, roll down the windows first to let the heat escape, then turn on the AC at the highest setting before rolling up the windows.

3. Monitor Your Tyre Pressure

  • Correct Inflation: Under-inflated tyres can be dangerous as they generate more heat due to increased friction. Increase tyre pressure by 3-5 psi during summer and regularly check it.

  • Spare Tyre: Ensure the spare tyre is also in good condition and properly inflated.

  • Alignment and Balancing: Get your tyres aligned and balanced to prevent excessive wear and improve fuel efficiency.

4. Get Your Radiator Serviced, Coolant Topped Up

  • Coolant Levels: Regularly check and top up the coolant levels to prevent engine overheating.

  • Radiator Check: Have your radiator serviced and checked for leaks, especially if your car is over three years old.

  • Correct Coolant: Use the appropriate coolant as specified by the manufacturer.

5. Check Engine and Transmission Fluids

  • Engine Oil: High temperatures can degrade engine oil quickly. Routinely check and top up the engine oil or use a heat-resistant grade oil.

  • Transmission Fluid: Ensure transmission fluid levels are adequate to avoid overheating and potential damage.

6. Inspect Hoses and Belts

  • Rubber Components: High temperatures can cause rubber hoses and belts to harden and eventually rupture. Physically check these components for wear and tear, and replace them as necessary.

  • Clamps and Clips: Ensure all clamps and clips are secure and in good condition.

7. Battery Care

  • Regular Checks: Excessive heat can reduce battery life by causing the fluid to evaporate and speeding up the chemical reactions inside the battery. Check the battery for proper charging rates and signs of corrosion.

  • Maintenance-Free Batteries: For cars with maintenance-free batteries, ensure all connections are secure and terminals are clean. For other batteries, check fluid levels more frequently during summer.

8. Polish Protection

  • Wax Coating: Apply a good coat of wax or polish to your car's paint. This not only enhances its appearance but also forms a protective layer that reflects a portion of the sun's heat.

  • Protective Polish: Choose a polish that offers an additional layer of protection against UV rays and heat.

By following these tips, you can protect your vehicle from the extreme heat and ensure it runs smoothly throughout the summer. Regular maintenance and preventive measures will keep your car in optimal condition, providing you with a safe and comfortable driving experience.
