Maserati, an Italian luxury vehicle manufacturer has officially cancelled its planned launch of MC20 Folgore, finally confirming the news we all have been hearing for a while.
Probably, The electric version of the supercar just didn’t catch on with buyers. However, Maserati has decided to move on and will now focus on a major update to the existing MC20 instead of launching an all-electric variant.
Why the Change?
According to Philippe Claverol, Maserati’s Head of Overseas Markets, the decision came because the traditional luxury car buyer still loves the feel and sound of a petrol engine. He pointed out that while some customers are exploring electric vehicles, many still crave the performance and sensations of a roaring engine. This means the electric supercar was a tough sell, prompting Maserati to shift gears and invest in improving the classic MC20.
What’s New for the MC20?
The updated MC20 will take some design and performance cues from the GT2 Stradale.
There are some noteworthy changes to look forward to:
Enhanced Power: The new version is expected to power a 640hp V6 engine, which is expected to be 10hp more powerful than before.
Lighter Build: One can expect that the weight can be reduced up to 60kg helping the car to feel even more efficient on the track.
Speed and Acceleration: Also, the refreshed MC20 aims to turn the table around with a top speed of 324kph and a 0-100kph sprint in just 2.8 seconds.
These tweaks will give the MC20 a fresh appeal without moving entirely into electric territory—a choice that reflects current buyer preferences.
What caused these decisions?
Maserati’s decision was followed by sales figures and market trends which were quite under close watch. The data concluded Maserati’s global sales have witnessed a drop of around 11,300 units worldwide. Its profits in 2024 have also dropped to 260 million euros (about Rs 2,455 crore), which is a serious decline after recording a profit of 141 million euro (about Rs 1,330 crore) in 2023.
Due to these difficulties the parent company Stellantis was forced to sell off almost 1.5 billion euros in investments, with a significant decline in the Chinese market affecting overall performance.
These figures make it clear that, despite the global shift to electric vehicles, the luxury sector continues to place a premium on performance and heritage.
According to the statistics, rather than making a complete switch to electrification, a balanced strategy is required given the current mix of consumer demand and market performance.
Industry Impact and Future Outlook
The MC20 Folgore's cancellation indicates a change in Maserati's approach. Maserati is attempting to improve a vehicle that already has a large following rather than aiming for an exclusive electric supercar.
This move is seen as a reaction to both consumer input and real market data, underlining a distinct pattern that traditional gasoline-powered supercars continue to be very popular.
In conclusion, Maserati has adjusted its strategy to customer tastes and reliable market data by dropping the MC20 Folgore launch and will now be focusing on redesigning the MC20. In addition to saving money on an electric project that fell short of expectations, this choice reaffirms the brand's dedication to providing its devoted clientele with the exhilarating driving experiences they want.
