Select petrol variants of the Victoris get a price cut of up to Rs. 39,000
Hybrid and CNG versions continue to draw benefits worth up to Rs. 90,000
Most carmakers have been nudging prices up over the past few weeks, but Maruti Suzuki has chosen to move the other way. The company has trimmed prices on select petrol variants of the Victoris by close to Rs. 39,000, turning it into one of the few models this season to get cheaper rather than costlier.
What makes this development stand out is that it has not come about because of sluggish demand. The Victoris has held its own as one of Maruti Suzuki's stronger performing SUVs since it went on sale, regularly finding a place among the brand's best selling utility vehicles.
Typically, a model doing this well would be a candidate for a price increase, which is what makes this cut somewhat unexpected.
There is more to the pricing story beyond the petrol range. Maruti Suzuki is continuing to offer benefits of up to Rs. 90,000 on the Strong Hybrid variants of the Victoris, along with offers of up to Rs. 80,000 on the CNG versions.
At first glance, this might seem like an odd move for an SUV that already has healthy demand behind it.
The reasoning probably has more to do with which variants are selling than with overall numbers. Standard petrol versions appear to make up a large share of Victoris sales, while the Strong Hybrid, despite its strong fuel efficiency numbers, comes at a noticeably higher price point. The ongoing benefits help narrow that gap for buyers weighing up the hybrid option.
Similarly, the offers on CNG variants help Maruti Suzuki hold its ground in a segment where running costs weigh heavily on a buyer's decision.
This pricing update also lands at a time when the mid-size SUV segment has no shortage of choices for buyers. Rather than pushing for higher volumes, Maruti Suzuki seems focused on fine tuning how each powertrain option is priced, keeping the Victoris an attractive proposition across its range rather than just on paper.
In a period when price hikes have become the norm across the industry, it is not often that a well-selling SUV gets more affordable. That alone makes this update to the Victoris lineup worth keeping an eye on for anyone considering the car.
