Maruti Suzuki Records Its Highest Ever Monthly Sales in May 2026
  • Maruti Suzuki sold 2,42,688 units in May 2026, its highest-ever monthly total, driven by strong SUV and compact car demand.
  • Domestic passenger vehicle sales grew around 40 per cent year-on-year, while exports rose 34 per cent over the same period.

Numbers do not lie, and the ones Maruti Suzuki put up in May 2026 are hard to argue with. The company registered total sales of 2,42,688 units last month, up 34.8 per cent from 1,80,077 units sold in May 2025.

It is the highest monthly sales figure the company has ever recorded, and it comes at a time when the brand is also preparing some of its most significant new product launches in years.

Domestic Sales Cross the 1.90 Lakh Mark for the First Time

Domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 1,90,337 units, marking a healthy 40 per cent year-on-year growth over 1,35,962 units sold in the corresponding month last year. That figure alone would have been considered exceptional in isolation, but when stacked against a broader domestic total that includes Light Commercial Vehicle sales and OEM supplies, Maruti's total domestic sales reached 2,00,774 units.

The 2-lakh-unit domestic barrier, once considered a milestone, has now been cleared with room to spare.

Utility Vehicles Remain the Engine of Growth

It is no secret that SUVs and MPVs have been reshaping the Indian market for some time now, and Maruti's utility vehicle portfolio has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of that shift.

The segment, which includes the Brezza, Ertiga, eVitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris and XL6, recorded sales of 79,267 units in May 2026, representing a growth of 44.4 per cent over 54,899 units sold in May 2025.

Models like the Fronx, Brezza, Grand Vitara and Ertiga have maintained particularly strong traction with buyers, and the segment's near-45 per cent growth rate is the clearest indicator of where Indian buyer preferences currently sit.

Compact Cars Hold Their Ground Too

While the SUV segment grabbed the headlines, Maruti's hatchback and compact car range was no slouch either.

The compact car segment, comprising the Alto, S-Presso, Baleno, Celerio, Ciaz, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR, registered combined sales of 97,830 units in May 2026, a significant increase from 68,736 units in May 2025.

Within the compact category, the Mini cars Alto and S-Presso together contributed 16,275 units, while the Compact and Mid-Size segment accounted for 81,555 units.

The Eeco van and Super Carry LCV also posted modest gains, rounding off a clean sweep across all domestic segments.

Exports Up 34% as Global Demand Strengthens

The good news was not confined to the domestic market. Maruti shipped 41,914 units overseas in May 2026, up 34.3 per cent from 31,219 units exported in May 2025.

For April-May 2026, Maruti recorded total sales of 4,82,334 units, compared to 3,59,868 units during the same period last year, with domestic passenger vehicle sales during this period standing at 3,78,041 units and exports reaching 81,968 units.

The two-month cumulative picture reinforces that May was not simply a one-off spike, it is part of a sustained upward trajectory.

A Record That Reflects More Than Just Good Numbers

There is a broader story behind these figures. A record month does not happen by accident, it is the result of a product range that covers nearly every price point in the market, backed by a distribution network that few can rival.

With five new products currently in various stages of testing and expected to launch between late 2026 and early 2027, the momentum shows little sign of easing. If May 2026 is the ceiling for now, it may not stay that way for long.
