Hyundai Hits 4.25M Zero-Emission Engine Tests
Hyundai Motor India Ltd has marked a milestone by testing more than 4.25 million powertrains using its Cold Bed Engine Testing technology. This method avoids running engines on fuel or fluids, aligning with Hyundai’s net-zero goals and reflecting a push for greener manufacturing.
Hyundai Motor India began using Cold Bed Engine Testing in 2013. Since then, every engine built has undergone this fuel-free process. Recently, the company celebrated testing over 4.25 million engines with zero carbon emissions.
Traditional engine tests run engines using petroleum fuels, lubricants, and coolants. In contrast, Cold Bed Engine Testing employs electric motors powered by renewable energy to turn the crankshaft. Smart sensors gather critical data on performance and quality without relying on fuel combustion.
By avoiding fuel and fluid use, Hyundai’s approach has saved approximately USD 1 million (around Rs 8.67 crore) in operational costs. It has also prevented over 2 million kilograms of CO2 emissions. These savings and emission cuts underline Hyundai’s commitment to cost-effective, eco-friendly processes.
Apart from Cold Bed Testing, Hyundai Motor India has implemented solar energy generation and water conservation at its facilities. These steps reinforce the brand’s holistic approach to sustainable manufacturing and support its net-zero carbon ambition.
Mr. Gopalakrishnan CS, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer at Hyundai Motor India, highlighted that testing over 4.25 million engines with zero-emission technology curbed over 2 million kg of CO2 and delivered around US $1 million in savings. He noted the fully automated, fuel-free process ensures high quality while advancing responsible mobility under the ‘Make in India, Made for the World’ vision.
