Luxury Cars Seized in Bengaluru Over Unpaid Taxes
The Bengaluru Transport Department took strict action against owners of high-end luxury cars who had been evading road tax payments. In a special enforcement operation conducted over the weekend, 30 luxury vehicles including Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Audi, Aston Martin, and Range Rover were seized.
The operation was spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner of Transport C Mallikarjun, along with a team of 41 officers, including Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) B Srinivas Prasad, Deepak, Srinivasappa, and Ranjith. These officers issued tax notices amounting to Rs 3 crore, demanding payment of the outstanding dues.
Why Were These Cars Seized?
According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, if a vehicle is registered in one state but is kept in another state for more than a year, the owner must re-register the vehicle and pay applicable road taxes in the new state. However, many luxury car owners in Bengaluru had failed to comply with this regulation.
Authorities had been monitoring high-end car owners in Bengaluru for some time, especially those who frequently take their vehicles on weekend drives. After gathering sufficient evidence, officials conducted the surprise crackdown, leading to multiple seizures.
“These vehicles were operating without paying road tax. We have issued notices to recover Rs 3 crore in dues from the owners,” said a senior transport official involved in the operation.
How Will This Impact Luxury Car Owners?
The crackdown serves as a stern warning to luxury car owners who attempt to evade taxes by keeping their vehicles unregistered or improperly taxed in Karnataka. Officials have emphasized that similar operations will continue.
Conclusion
The Bengaluru Transport Department’s strict action against tax evasion is a major step toward enforcing road tax compliance among luxury vehicle owners. With 30 high-end cars seized and Rs 3 crore in tax dues to be recovered, authorities have sent a strong message that tax evasion will not be tolerated.
Luxury car owners must ensure timely registration and tax payments to avoid legal trouble and financial penalties. As enforcement intensifies, the department may extend similar actions to other cities, making compliance even more crucial.
