What are the steps involved in getting your vehicle registered in Karnataka

Buying a vehicle is like a dream come true for many of us. From saving money for years to cutting down on lower-priority areas, purchasing a vehicle needs a lot of planning. But we often don't consider the various registration stages after buying a new vehicle.

Vehicle registration process

If you're planning or have already bought a vehicle, it's important to consider the legalities involved. Getting the vehicle registration done with the RTO is a step-by-step procedure. RTO is the pivotal government body accountable for the following functions-

  • Keeping track of all the vehicles on the roads
  • Assigning a permanent registration number to the vehicle
  • Issuing driving license
  • Inspection of vehicle insurance
  • Assessing pollution control by vehicles

Step-by-step Karnataka vehicle registration details

Any vehicle purchased in Karnataka must be registered in one of the state's RTO. The process has turned easier now because registrations happen online. Online registration takes less time & eliminates the hassle of queuing up.

Now let's have a look at the Karnataka vehicle registration details.

  1. Visit the official Karnataka Ministry of Transport website. Please note that this is the authorized website on which you need to register. No other website can register your new vehicle in Karnataka.

  2. The next step is to reach out to the 'Vahan Over Web Identity' section and fill out all the details. After completing the detailed filling, you need to take a printout of the application form. This hard copy needs to be submitted to the nearest RTO Office. Please note that there are 66 RTOs in Karnataka. You need to visit the one nearest to you.

  3. Along with the hard copy of the application form, some other documents are mandatory for verification at the RTO. The documents include the following

  4. Two passport-size photographs of the owner
  5. Form 20, or the first application form filed by the applicant for vehicle registration. If the vehicle is under a lease/ hire agreement, then a financer-prepared duplicate copy is needed.
  6. The sale certificate needs to be furnished by the seller of the vehicle. This document is called Form 21 of the CMVR.
  7. You also need form 22 of the CMVR. It is a pollution control and safety compliance declaration by the applicant.
  8. With the latest government guidelines, the insurance certificate has become a must for vehicle registration.
  9. If the applicant practices agriculture and is buying a vehicle for the same, then it's expected of them to produce Form 60 & Form 61
  10. If the vehicle has been imported from a foreign country, then a customs clearance certificate must be given.
  11. Address proof of the vehicle owner.
  12. The applicant must pay a stipulated fee if they desire an application number.
  13. Next up is the payment of registration fees. The total sum of the registration fee includes different components.
  14. The registration fee comprises the form fee, the fitness certificate charges, and the smart card facility fee. Also, the registration fee varies from vehicle to vehicle. For example, the registration cost of four-wheelers is more than 4 times that of two-wheelers. It's even higher for heavy and commercial vehicles.
