Introducing the Volkswagen Taigun, a stunning compact SUV that redefines style and performance. With its striking design, spacious interiors, and advanced technology, the Volkswagen Taigun promises a thrilling driving experience. Equipped with powerful engine options and a host of safety features, it ensures a safe and comfortable journey for you and your loved ones. Embrace the innovation and excellence of Volkswagen Cars with the Volkswagen Taigun, a true masterpiece on the roads.
Volkswagen Taigun is a 5-seater mid-sized mass-market SUV launched in one of the hottest segments in the Indian automotive industry. Also called a SUVW, Volkswagen Taigun has a solid European build quality and looks chic from the outside.
The compact size, superior comfort features, and technology make it one of the most compelling SUVs in the market.
Volkswagen Taigun is designed for those willing to look beyond brands like Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Creta.
Its sporty petrol engines and excellent handling make the Taigun one of the best SUVs in its class.
The prototype version of the SUV was revealed at the Indian Auto Expo in February 2020, followed by the unveiling of the production-spec model a year later.
The car was launched in two broad trims, Dynamic and Performance, with multiple variants.
Where the Dynamic features three variants Comfortline, Highline and Topline, the Performance trim, on the other hand, comes in GT and GT Plus variants.
The carmaker also launched a special Anniversary Edition in September 2022.
The Anniversary Edition is available with a new Rising Blue colour option, 1st-anniversary badge and specific highlights, including door-edge protectors, blackened C-pillar and black wing mirror.
The special edition has cosmetic and interior updates and only has a 1.0L petrol engine.
Inside, the steering wheel features the 1st Anniversary badge. The car remains mechanically unchanged.
The latest model was launched in March 2023 with changes to the engine and adding a few features.
The 2023 model of Taigun now comes with an updated engine that complies with rear driving emission regulations.
The powertrain is also compatible with E20 regulations, meaning the petrol variant can now run with a combination of 20 per cent ethanol.
The changes in the engine of the 2023 Volkswagen Taigun are in line with the latest BS6 Phase II norms, which came into effect on April 1, 2023.
The 2023 Volkswagen Taigun's 1.0L TSI Dynamic Line and 1.5L TSI Performance Line GT variant now feature auto headlights and auto coming/leaving home lights.
Presently, the Volkswagen Taigun price in India starts at Rs. 11.62 lakhs for the base 1.0 Comfortline variant and goes up to Rs. 19.06 lakhs for the top-spec 1.5 GT Plus model.
Since its launch in India, the price of Taigun has increased by Rs. 1.5 lakhs. All prices are ex-showroom.
From the outside, the car is a sight to behold and speaks of the European build quality.
The SUV sports a dual-slat chrome grille connected with rectangular-shaped LED projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights.
The chrome highlights at the bottom part of the bumper look exquisite.
At the side, the car appears to be a proper SUV with flared wheel arches absorbing 17-inch alloy wheels.
The plastic cladding and roof rails further enhance the bold stance.
The rear profile is equally impressive, with the first-in-class infinity LED taillights running seamlessly across while the rear spoiler adds to the sporty look.
Step in, and you will find yourself sitting in a business lounge. The dual-tone premium interiors set the mood right from the word go.
The carbon finish and décor highlights lend a distinctive look to the dashboard. It seems the carmaker has designed the interiors for those with an eye for detail.
The 10-inch touchscreen infotainment has been nicely integrated into the dashboard.
The driver information display is an 8-inch digital instrument cluster called the virtual cockpit.
The system is powered by wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, My Volkswagen Connected car technology and paired with a 6-speaker premium sound system.
In the comfort zone, you get automatic climate control, automatic headlights, automatic rain-sensing wipers, a cooled glove box, ventilated front seats, cruise control and wireless charging.
Touch AC controls, and the sunroof adds some spice.
In terms of practicality, there is plenty of provision for storage, such as large door bins, seatback pockets, cupholders and 385 litres of boot space which can be further increased by folding rear seats in a 60:40 ratio.
There is 12V Plug at the front and 2 USB charging slots at the front and the rear.
The seats are nicely contoured and supportive, with the rear ones giving more leg and knee room. However, they are not wide enough to support three full-sized adults.
The new Volkswagen Taigun is designed to protect and has enhanced safety features. The car gets a seal of 5-star Euro NCAP which gives it an edge over its Indian and Korean rivals.
There are 6 airbags provided in the car, including side and curtain airbags.
The braking mechanism includes ABS with EBD, electronic differential lock, multi-collision brake, brake disc wiping and hydraulic brake boosting.
The stability is ensured by electronic stability control, traction control, rollover protection and hill-hold assist.
Then there are features like a tyre pressure monitoring system and ISOFIX child seat mounts, lane change indicator, rear defogger, and rear parking camera with sensors optimising safety further.
The Taigun is powered by 1.0L or 1.5L turbo-petrol units. The 1.0L 3-cylinder TSI motor pumps out 115PS and 178Nm torque, matched to a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed torque converter AT.
The refinement levels of this engine are commendable, as the motor thrum is hardly audible. The engine's throttle response is adequate, and the car gets going without trouble.
The 6-speed manual is satisfactory, and the shifting is mechanical and positive. Once the speed builds up, the power flows linearly and uninterruptedly.
The car dashes off the line to hit the 100kmph mark in about 10.5 seconds, reaching the top speed of over 150kmph.
The 1.5L TSI engine, on the other hand, produces 150PS and 250Nm torque, coupled with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSC AT. The throttle feedback from the engine is much better than the 1.0L iteration, with excellent drivability.
On the highways, the 1.5L engine is a fast performer and offers a lot of fun. The car with this engine can sprint from 0-100kmph in 9.1 seconds, touching a top speed of up to 190kmph.
The suspensions are sorted, and the car offers a balanced ride quality and excellent road manners. The steering response is direct and sharp, while the braking system is well-calibrated.
The claimed fuel economy of the Taigun 1.0L engine is 18.10kmpl for the MT and 16.44kmpl for the AT models. And surprisingly, the more powerful 1.5L returns a better fuel efficiency of 18.47kmpl for the manual and 17.88kmpl for the automatic variants.
In real-world mixed driving conditions, the car can deliver anywhere around 13kmpl, which is decent.
