Toyota Kirloskar Commitment To Women Equality

Toyota Kirloskar's Commitment to Women's Equality

Toyota Kirloskar's Commitment to Women's Equality

Toyota Kirloskar Motor makes a bold commitment to promoting gender equality and women empowerment ahead of Women’s Equality Day on 26 August. This isn’t just a token gesture for the day but rather a part of a long-term strategy that’s deeply woven into the company’s goals and values. This goal aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly focusing on Gender Equality Decent Work, and Economic Growth, TKM is driving forward with a series of initiatives designed to foster a more inclusive and diverse workplace.

Aiming for 30% Female Representation by 2030

One of the most ambitious aspects of TKM’s plan is its goal to increase the representation of women in its workforce to 30% by the year 2030. This is a significant leap, requiring more than just good intentions. TKM has already laid down the groundwork with a robust Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy. This includes forming a dedicated senior-level team that focuses solely on DEI initiatives. The company is also benchmarking itself against the best practices across industries and aligning with international standards, particularly the International Labour Organization’s 2030 agenda, which emphasizes creating greater opportunities for women.

Milestones in Women’s Empowerment

Earlier this year, TKM celebrated a significant milestone in its journey toward gender equality. On March 13, 2024, the company held a capping ceremony for its first batch of 55 women supervisors. This was a moment of pride, marking the culmination of their training and the start of their new roles within the company. Alongside this, TKM welcomed 160 new female team members, bringing the total number of women in the company to over 450. But TKM isn’t stopping there. By the end of the year, the company plans to increase this number to over 850.

In addition to increasing the number of women in its workforce, TKM has also introduced a Gender Diversity Standard Operating Procedure Manual. This manual is a comprehensive guide that outlines best practices for promoting gender diversity within the company. It’s not just about hiring more women; it’s about creating an environment where they can thrive. TKM has also rolled out unconscious bias surveys and launched the "Samvardhana" sensitization program, further demonstrating its holistic approach to fostering an inclusive workplace.

Leadership Speaks on Gender Equality

The importance of gender equality at TKM is underscored by the words of G. Shankara, Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration at Toyota Kirloskar Motor. He emphasized that gender equality is not just a goal but a critical driver of the company’s success and sustainability. According to Shankara, TKM’s commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace is deeply embedded in its organizational values. By setting ambitious targets and investing in the necessary infrastructure and training programs, TKM is creating a work environment where every individual can thrive.

As the company gears up to celebrate Women’s Equality Day, Shankara reaffirmed TKM’s dedication to creating equal opportunities and paving the way for a more equitable future for all. His words reflect the company’s belief that gender equality is not just a corporate responsibility but also a key factor in its long-term success.

Expanding Training Programs to Support Women

TKM’s commitment to gender diversity is also evident in its efforts to expand its training programs. The Toyota Technical Training Institute (TTTI) has doubled its intake, now accommodating 1200 students, with up to 600 spots reserved for female students. This move is designed to ensure that more women have access to the skills and training they need to succeed in the automotive industry. The Toyota Kaushalya program, another key initiative, offers a two-year training program specifically for rural and economically disadvantaged students, providing them with the opportunity to build a better future.

To support these initiatives, TKM has invested heavily in infrastructure. The company has constructed a new dormitory at TTTI to accommodate 600 female students, ensuring that they have a safe and comfortable environment in which to live and study. Additionally, TKM has upgraded safety features and facilities, including enhanced restrooms and locker rooms, further demonstrating its commitment to creating a supportive environment for its female employees.

Looking Beyond the Organization

TKM’s vision for gender equality extends beyond the boundaries of the company. The company believes that diversity and inclusion are not just corporate responsibilities but societal benefits that contribute to the development of world-class talent and mass happiness. By supporting the professional development and advancement of women through targeted initiatives and programs, TKM is ensuring that they have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in their careers.

This is not just about hitting targets; it’s about creating a workplace and a world where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
