First coming with a gasoline engine, the new Toyota FJ Cruiser may eventually obtain the 2.8-litre diesel engine used in the Fortuner.
Thailand has already started production, and deliveries are planned for later this year. The SUV may arrive in India as early as 2028.
SUV enthusiasts are talking about Toyota's new FJ Cruiser, which is officially called the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ. This SUV, which debuted at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, combines contemporary technology and high-quality construction with a classic, boxy form that pays homage to Toyota's off-road legacy.
Toyota's Ban Pho factory in Thailand has already begun producing this eagerly awaited SUV. Later this year, the company intends to start deliveries, and it is anticipated that the model will spread to other parts of the world, such as South America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. With an anticipated debut in 2028, Indian fans are keeping a close eye on it.
The FJ Cruiser's base engine will be a 2.7-litre 2TR-FE naturally aspirated petrol engine. With a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system, this machine generates around 163 horsepower and 246 Nm of torque. The engine is capable, but its torque numbers are not as high as those of its larger diesel-powered competitors.
There is cause for optimism among enthusiasts hoping for a diesel version. According to recent sources, Toyota is thinking of introducing a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine for the FJ Cruiser in a few areas. Known from the well-liked Toyota Fortuner, this turbocharged four-cylinder engine generates roughly 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque.
In other Toyota models, this diesel engine is frequently combined with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which boosts low-end power output, smoothes out start-stop operation, and increases fuel efficiency. However, Toyota has not yet stated if the FJ Cruiser will appear with the diesel or mild-hybrid versions.
An official launch date for India has not yet been disclosed, despite the FJ Cruiser's global premiere and production plans being underway. The SUV is expected to be available in Indian showrooms by late 2028, according to industry reports. It will serve as a tough, lifestyle-focused substitute for ladder-frame SUVs like the Fortuner and the much-anticipated Prado models.
In conclusion, Toyota's new FJ Cruiser offers timeless design, possible engine flexibility with diesel power, and a worldwide launch starting this year, with India on the horizon.
