Toll Booths to Vanish as India Gears Up for Satellite-Based Toll System

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced a complete overhaul of the toll collection system across Indian highways in an infrastructure update that is going from sexy to ultra-sexy.

The central government promises to bring out a new toll policy in 15 days, which will abolish physical toll collection altogether and make way for a satellite-based automated toll user access system.

At a public event, Gadkari said: "A new toll policy will be announced soon. I won't tell you much right now, but once it is launched, it will leave no reason for anyone to complain about tolls." Essentially, this policy depends on highly advanced technology in the areas of GPS tracking and vehicle number plate recognition.

Under this setup, the toll will be deducted directly from the commuter's bank account without enforced stoppage at the toll plaza.

Mumbai-Goa Highway Completion on the cards

Besides the introduction, Gadkari spoke on another awaited update: the Mumbai-Goa highway. The completion of the highway, delayed by land acquisition problems and litigation for so many years, is now on course to be completed by June 2025. "There were fights among brothers, legal cases, and many other complications regarding land compensation. But now, all these issues have been cleared, and the project is on speed now," said Gadkari. Once the highway opens to the public, it will shorten journey times and serve as a catalyst for development in Konkan.
