Tata Sierra SUV to Make a Comeback in FY2026 as EV First, ICE Later
Tata Motors formally announced that an all-new Tata Sierra SUV will soon be hitting the Indian roads in FY2026, while igniting nostalgia behind one of the most recognizable nameplates in India.
The Sierra will come first as an electric vehicle, and later as an internal combustion engine (ICE) variation, as Tata looks to pursue a larger customer base.
The reborn Sierra turned heads at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 when the SUV was shown to the public in almost-production EV guise. The vehicle's visual language effectively combines retro design and elements with contemporary features.
A cool gimmick in the design is the glass canopy-style roof, which is a nod back to the original Sierra. The Sierra has flush pop-out door handles, roof rails, dual-tone alloy wheels, and Tata's new LED DRL signature, which extends throughout the front grille.
The interior of the Sierra appears to have a simple and modern layout. The interior has dual integrated displays, a touch-sensitive centre console, a four-spoke digital steering wheel, ADAS hardware as well as a 360-degree camera system. The interior features indicate a strong correlation with the cabin tech and comfort of Tata's upcoming Harrier EV.
Tata will launch the Sierra EV first, but ICE alternatives are expected to follow. The ICE models could use Tata's 2.0-litre diesel and the TGDi 1.5-litre petrol engines, as seen in Harrier and Safari models. Tata did not specify the engines, but it is reasonable to suggest the SUV utilizes either the Omega platform or the Gen 2 platform.
This is Tata’s second large-scale revival of a legacy brand, following the successful re-birth of the Safari in 2021. The new Sierra taps into India’s multi-generational loyalty for Tata SUVs, combining the nostalgia of the 1990s alongside more modern sensibilities in an 'electric-first' manner.
The update from India's pioneer of electrification in SUVs is timely as the auto market makes a shift towards electrification.
