For the calendar year, Tata Motors—the manufacturer of the best-selling car in India in 2024—overtook its archrival, Mahindra Auto, in March 2025. Though Tata Motors has grown month-on-month, the company recorded a decline in sales performance compared to March of last year. Let's break down the numbers.
Tata Sales March 2025 Punch from Tata Motors took the accolades as the country's best-selling vehicle in CY2024. However, the company suffered in February 2025, recording some of its lowest numbers at 46,437 units. Tata Motors dropped to the fourth position that month, just behind Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, and Hyundai.
The rejuvenation of sales of Tata Motors gives the victory to Mahindra Auto as the company registered 51,616 units in the domestic market in March 2025. The figure is impressive as it is an 11.16% growth MoM against the figure of 46,437 units sold in February 2025; the additional 5,181 units gained in volume MoM.
With the registration of 50,110 units in March 2024, Tata has been able to achieve 3.01% YoY growth in total domestic PV sales. Another factor was the company's expansion in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, which increased exports to 256 units from 187 units the previous year with a growth of 37%.
On the downside, sales for electric vehicles enjoyed heavy losses, registering a sales drop of 20.56% as a total of 5,353 units were sold last month while 6,738 were sold the same time last year.
Q4 & YTD Analysis Though the month-on-month sales for Tata Motors remained mostly the other way red during the Q4 sales and YTD FY25 sales analysis, entering the actuals reveals the company sold 1,46,127 units in Q4 FY25, thus dipping 5.73% compared to 1,55,010 units sold in Q4 FY24.
EV sales in Q4 FY25 were at a total of 15,936, a decline from 20,640 from a year ago. Export numbers were the only silver lining, with a 36.04% YoY growth, with exports of 872 units as opposed to 641 units from Q4 FY24. The overall PV sales dipped by about 5.56% compared to last year, recording YTD sales of 1,46,999 units as against the YTD sales from last year at 1,55,651 units, losing 8,652 units in a YoY comparison.
YTD, Tata sold 5,53,585 units in FY25; this is 3.04% down over 5,70,955 from FY24, thus losing 17,370 units in volume. Total EVs sold in FY25 were 12.94% less at 64,276 units in FY25 as compared to 73,833 units in FY24. Once again, export was the saving grace with 5.43% YoY growth. Not enough, as total PV sales YTD was 5,56,263 YTD, down 3% YoY versus 5,73,495 units in FY24.
Commercial vehicles proved to be somewhat of a mixed bag, selling 41,122 units in March 2025, along with a 3% YoY decline. Sales in Q4 FY25 went down by 3% YoY, clocking 1,05,643 units, YTD in FY25 sold 3,76,903 units, down by 5% versus 3,95,845 units a year ago.
Taking a look at some of these figures, SCV Cargo and Pickup trucks led to a huge decline with a 17% YoY decline in sales. HCV trucks, on the other hand, were relatively better off with sales of 12,856 units witnessing an increase of 1% YoY, whereas ILMCV trucks recorded sales of 7,181 units with a 6% increase, and passenger carriers recorded sales of 6,088 units with a 4% increase, year-on-year.
