SUVs Drive Passenger Vehicle Sales Growth Across Brands
The Indian passenger vehicle market saw a robust surge in November 2024, driven primarily by the rising popularity of SUVs. Leading automakers Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Tata Motors, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) reported strong sales growth, with SUV models making significant contributions to their overall dispatches.
Maruti Suzuki: Record Sales in the SUV Segment
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest automaker, recorded a substantial uptick in domestic passenger vehicle sales. The company dispatched 141,312 units in November 2024, marking an increase from 134,158 units in November 2023.
The primary driver of this growth was the SUV segment, where sales of models like the Brezza, Grand Vitara, and Jimny soared to 59,003 units, a sharp rise from 49,016 units in the same month last year. This indicates a growing preference among Indian consumers for compact and mid-size SUVs that combine affordability with advanced features.
Toyota Kirloskar: Impressive Growth and Exports
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) also posted a remarkable 44% increase in sales, delivering 25,586 units in November 2024 compared to 17,818 units during the same period last year. Additionally, the automaker exported 1,140 units, further contributing to its impressive performance.
Sabari Manohar, Vice President of TKM's Sales, Service, and Used Car Business, emphasized the success of the brand's diverse portfolio. “Our offerings, from hatchbacks to SUVs, continue to cater to the varying mobility needs of our customers,” he stated, highlighting Toyota’s ability to adapt to shifting consumer preferences.
SUVs: The Driving Force Behind the Market
The consistent demand for SUVs across price segments underscores their role as the growth engine of the passenger vehicle market. Models such as Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara, Brezza, and Toyota’s Fortuner and Innova Hycross, appeal to buyers seeking versatility, comfort, and advanced features.
Conclusion
As 2024 comes to a close, automakers are optimistic about sustained demand for SUVs. With new launches and competitive pricing, the trend is likely to continue into the new year, solidifying SUVs’ dominance in the Indian automotive landscape.
