Skoda’s 1-litre TSI petrol engine becomes the first car to be certified E20-compliant by ARAI

Skoda’s Kushaq and Slavia model has achieved a significant milestone by achieving certification from The Automotive Research Association of India. It becomes the first car manufacturer in India to achieve this certification. Currently, the 1-litre TSI petrol engine has been certified as E20 compliant, and Skoda anticipates that its 1.5-litre TSI engine will also meet these standards by the fourth quarter of 2024.

Understanding Ethanol and Its Benefits

E20 fuel, consisting of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, is a biofuel that the Indian government mandates all vehicles to use by April 2025. Ethanol is derived from renewable sources such as sugarcane, barley, and corn, making it more environmentally friendly. The use of ethanol not only reduces tailpipe emissions but also enhances fuel efficiency. This shift towards biofuels is part of India's broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and curb pollution.

Engine Specifications and Performance

The E20-certified 1-litre TSI petrol engine is available in both the Kushaq and Slavia models. Buyers have the option of choosing between a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic torque converter transmission. This engine, also found in the Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun, delivers an impressive output of 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque. The transition to E20 compliance is expected to further enhance the fuel efficiency of this engine.

The first vehicle to feature the E20-compliant engine was the Kushaq Onyx AT. Moving forward, Skoda plans to incorporate this engine into all 1-litre TSI models produced at its Chakan plant in Pune. This strategic move underscores Skoda's commitment to sustainability and innovation in automotive technology.

Skoda’s Vision for the Future

Petr Janeba, Brand Director of Skoda Auto India, expressed his enthusiasm for this achievement. He emphasized that Skoda's focus extends beyond driving dynamics and safety to include efficiency and sustainability. The company’s TSI technology has been rigorously tested for efficiency and low emissions, making it a robust and versatile powertrain. The E20 certification is a testament to the adaptability and efficiency of Skoda’s 1-litre TSI engine. Janeba is confident that the 1.5-litre TSI engine will achieve similar success in its upcoming tests.

In Conclusion, Skoda's achievement of E20 compliance for its Kushaq and Slavia models is a significant step towards a more sustainable future in the automotive industry. By adopting E20 fuel, Skoda is contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promoting the use of renewable energy sources. This move aligns with global trends and governmental policies aimed at reducing environmental impact and enhancing energy efficiency. Skoda’s proactive approach in achieving E20 compliance demonstrates its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and leadership in the Indian market. As Skoda continues to advance its technology and meet stringent standards, it sets a positive example for other manufacturers in the industry.
