Skoda Unveils Kylaq: India’s Next Compact SUV with a Crystal-Clear Vision

In an exciting development for automotive enthusiasts, Skoda Auto has revealed the name of its highly anticipated first-ever compact SUV: the Kylaq The, Even after the civil war the problem of children involved in armed groups persists and although no specific group recruiting child soldiers is called out by name, the Kylaq is targeted. Slated to launch by March 2025, the Skoda Kylaq has already begun brewing excitement and what will further add to it is the beautiful story sort of behind the name Kylaq.

The name Kylaq emerged victorious from a public naming contest that Skoda held, where participants had the chance to vote on a selection of ten potential names. Kylaq, which is derived from the Sanskrit word for crystal and inspired by the majestic Mount Kailash, stood out with the most votes. The choice of name is not just a nod to Indian culture but also follows Skoda’s tradition of naming its SUVs in India with a K and a Q, like its predecessor, the Kushaq.

Design and Features

The Skoda Kylaq will be built on the Volkswagen MQB A0 IN platform, making it a more compact version of the Kushaq. Design enthusiasts will find familiar elements in the Kylaq’s styling, with teaser images revealing a distinctive split headlamp setup, a slatted grille, and a dynamic kinked glasshouse. The SUV’s design is expected to reflect Skoda’s ‘Modern Solid’ language, which emphasizes robust and contemporary styling.

The Kylaq will feature a shorter wheelbase compared to the Kushaq, which, combined with reduced front and rear overhangs, will position it in the sub-4-metre segment. This strategic sizing is aimed at enhancing maneuverability and making the vehicle more accessible in urban environments, while still retaining the substantial presence typical of Skoda SUVs.

Inside, the Kylaq’s cabin is anticipated to closely mirror that of the Kushaq, but with additional enhancements. Skoda plans to equip the Kylaq with advanced features such as a 360-degree camera system and a comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite right from launch. These additions are expected to elevate the driving experience and safety standards, setting the Kylaq apart from its competitors.

Performance and Competition

Under the hood, the Kylaq will be powered by Skoda’s 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, delivering 115hp and 178Nm of torque. This engine will be the sole powertrain option for the Kylaq, unlike many competitors who offer multiple engine choices. The SUV will come with a choice of a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, providing flexibility and ease of driving.

In terms of competition, the Kylaq will face off against popular models such as the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, and Maruti Brezza. Skoda is expected to adopt an aggressive pricing strategy, with an estimated price range of Rs 8 lakh-14 lakh (ex-showroom). This competitive pricing, combined with the vehicle’s expected features and performance, will likely make the Kylaq a strong contender in the compact SUV segment.

Celebrating the Name

The excitement surrounding the Kylaq extends beyond its design and performance. Skoda’s naming contest received an impressive 2 lakh entries, featuring over 24,000 unique names. As a token of appreciation, Skoda will reward the contest winner with the very first unit of the Kylaq that rolls off the production line. Additionally, ten other winners will receive an exclusive trip to Skoda’s headquarters in Prague, including a tour of the Skoda Museum and the city itself. The winners will be announced on Skoda Auto India’s social media channels, adding a celebratory touch to the brand’s latest milestone.

In summary, the Skoda Kylaq promises to be a game-changer in the compact SUV market, combining contemporary design, advanced features, and competitive pricing. As the launch date approaches, automotive fans and prospective buyers alike will be keenly watching for further updates on this exciting new addition to Skoda’s lineup.
