Mercedes G-Class ‘Stronger Than the 1980s’ Edition Channels Retro Cool with Modern Brawn

Mercedes-Benz is in a full retro mode with its ever-so-good-limited G-Class SUV edition. The 'Stronger Than the 1980s' special edition, inspired in part by the original model from 1979, combines its strong luxury, power, and technology with that of today. Exclusivity is at its ultimate level, since only 460 units of this vintage-esque G-Class were ever to be produced globally.

Designed For Retro With A Modern Twist

The front face of this SUV is an amalgamation of cues from the old days as a vintage nod, which include orange indicators, a classical Mercedes-Benz badge, headlight guards, and Night Black Magno stipples all over the body. It comes painted in two heritage colors — Agave Green and Colorado Beige — that remind us of the days of yore.

As per tradition, the off-roader integrates some old-style Mercedes branding with a ladder and roof rack. However, the highlight is the ‘Schöckl Proved’ plaque on the B-pillar, which is a tribute to mountain-grade torture tests endured by the G-Class.

Inside: Nostalgia With A Dove Grey Finish

The Dove Grey checked upholstery is seen to create an interior mood in seeming contradiction to the blackened nature of the dashboard and the special-branding marks, with the grab handle reading 'Stronger Than the 1980s' and a tag on the center console noting '1 of 460.'

Nevertheless, true to its retro-future concept, the special edition hosts high-end tech such as dual 12.3-inch displays, a Burmester 3D surround sound system, a sunroof, and illuminated puddle lamps showcasing the words "Stronger than Time" on the ground.

Under The Hood: Petrol And Diesel Options

The limited edition model features two powertrains that are not AMG. The G450d is improved by a 2.9-liter mild-hybrid diesel engine that cranks out 367 hp along with 750Nm worth of torque. With this, the 0-100 kph time is 5.8 seconds.

On the other hand, G500 is a 3.0-liter turbo-petrol engine producing up to 449 hp and 560Nm, 5.4 seconds of acceleration from 0-100kph. Both these engines run on the same 9-speed automatic transmission, limited to a top-end speed of 210kph.

Launch and Availability

Bookings are open worldwide, but Mercedes-Benz India has yet to confirm whether this rare gem will set foot in India. For now, 'Stronger Than the 1980s' is a celebration of an epoch, timeless design, and modern engineering.
