Maruti Jimny to export three times as many units as in India by April 25

The Maruti Jimny was welcomed with a cold shoulder in India; however, it was a record-breaking hit in other parts of the world. The 5-door Maruti Jimny was launched in June 2023, and since then has already passed the 1 lakh unit dispatch mark, with 75,844 being exported and only 26,180 units sold internally, promising to become a marketing move in the global sales strategy of Maruti Suzuki.

Export Numbers Drive Jimny’s Success

Based on SIAM figures, as of April-end 2025, 102,024 units were shipped out of Marutis' plants of the Jimny brand. It is worth noting that only 26 percent of the sales were carried out in India, whereas the remainder (74 percent) was exported.

Such important markets globally like Mexico, South Africa, Australia and lately Japan have had their interest piqued by the made in India SUV overwhelmingly.

Roaring Welcome of Jimny 5-Door in Japan

In January 2025, Suzuki launched the Jimny 5-door in Japan as the Nomade, further boosting its popularity worldwide. A few days after the carmaker opened the bookings in Japan, it recorded more than 50,000 preorders and had to pause the orders, given the overwhelming demand. This strengthened Jimny as one of the most successful Indian export cars.

Indefensive domestic sales

Jimny did not continue to offer good sales in the domestic market, even though it began well with 30,000 bookings after Auto Expo 2023. The sales in FY2025 showed a decreased rate of 49% year on year with 8,740 only units being sold compared to 17,009 units in FY2024. Even a slight rebound in April 2025, when 431 units were sold (increasing by 60 MoM), indicates that it sold modest volumes when compared to its competitors.

Specs and Competition

Available from 12.76 lakh to 14.81 lakh, the engine used by the Jimny is 1.5-litre, K15B petrol engine (105hp, 134Nm), and can either use a 5-speed manual transmission, or a 4-speed automatic. It has a purported mileage of 16.94 km/l. Both of them are lifestyle off-roaders targeting the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. Jimny does not have any direct competitors.

The Jimny is not a pioneer back in its native country, but world over, it is an obviously popular product in the Maruti Suzuki stable.
