Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce the India-made Jimny Nomade in Japan next month, marking a significant milestone in the history of this legendary off-roader. This will be the first-ever five-door Jimny in the Japanese market, expanding Suzuki's lineup beyond its traditional three-door Kei car version. The Jimny Nomade is largely based on the Indian model but will come with standard 4WD, an advanced feature list, and multiple powertrain options to cater to different driving needs.
The Jimny has been an off-road icon since its debut in 1970, but until now, Japan only had the three-door variant due to strict Kei car regulations. However, with rising global demand for more spacious and practical SUVs, Suzuki has decided to introduce the five-door Jimny Nomade in its home country. While compact by Indian standards, this model exceeds Japan’s Kei car regulations, meaning it will be taxed at a higher rate.
The Jimny Nomade will be powered by the K15B 1.5L petrol engine, producing 109bhp and 136Nm of torque. Buyers will have the choice of a five-speed manual transmission (MT) or a four-speed automatic transmission (AT). As an authentic off-roader, it comes with Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system as standard, featuring a low-range transfer case for superior off-road capability.
Inside, the Jimny Nomade is expected to offer modern features such as:
Touchscreen infotainment system
Climate control
Height-adjustable driver’s seat
Full LED lighting package
On the safety front, it will come equipped with:
Six airbags
360-degree camera
ISOFIX child seat anchors
With the introduction of the five-door Jimny Nomade, Suzuki is catering to both urban and adventure seekers in Japan. While the three-door Jimny remains the classic favorite, the five-door version will offer more practicality and interior space, making it a viable choice for families and enthusiasts alike.
Despite its higher taxation, the Jimny Nomade is expected to attract a strong following, blending rugged charm with modern features. Whether navigating city streets or tackling off-road terrain, this new SUV is set to make a bold impact in Suzuki’s home market.
