Hyundai Ioniq 2 Concept Teased Ahead of Global Debut at IAA
Hyundai is planning to broaden its Ioniq lineup with a new subcompact EV, which it teased on the eve of its worldwide debut at the IAA Mobility Show 2025 in Munich.
The expo, taking place from September 9 - 14, will feature the future mobility plan of Hyundai; its smallest Ioniq model to date is likely to be labeled as Ioniq 2.
The teaser images show a streamlined design form with curvaceous lines, mesh openings, bulging wheel arches and a falling bonnet. The roofline gradually changes into the rear windshield that is topped off with a ducktail spoiler.
Although the lighting equipment is not revealed in the photos, previous spy images suggested slender LED headlights, DRLs and full-width LED bars at the front and rear in the same manner as the facelifted Ioniq 6 sedan.
The Whole Ioniq 2 is thought to be based on Hyundai E-GMP platform, which already underlines some models, including the Kia EV2 and EV3.
Reports indicate only a single electric motor that generates 150 kW (204 PS) and another of 58.3 kWh of battery. Ranges are estimated at approximately 430 km (WLTP) and makes it a viable choice both in urban and inter-urban motoring.
Visually smaller than its two siblings, the EV will be positioned right above the Inster EV in the Hyundai lineup. Like the Hyundai i20, it is size-compromised and therefore targets consumers seeking a smaller, environmentally friendly fill-in to gas-guzzling hatchbacks and crossovers like the i20 and Bayon.
The European Electric subcompact cars will also be a strong competitor and include the Renault 5 E-Tech, Citroen e-C3, Opel Corsa Electric, Peugeot E-208, Nissan Micra EV, and even the BYD Dolphin.
Due to current testing, by early 2026, the model should be launched in the international market.
Although Hyundai is yet to confirm an India launch, the subcompact Ioniq 2 can do really well in the subcompact EV territory. Initially, Hyundai will emphasize launching the Inster EV that would be assembled domestically at the Sriperumbudur plant.
