Gurugram Implements Strict 90-Day Challan Payment Rule: Unpaid Vehicles to Face Impoundment

Gurugram authorities have tightened traffic regulations, mandating that all pending challans be cleared within 90 days. If a vehicle is found with an overdue fine, it will be detained under Section 167(8) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Drivers are urged to clear dues by February 10, 2025.

The Gurugram traffic police have issued a fresh directive targeting unpaid challans. If a vehicle owner fails to pay a traffic fine within 90 days, they may be detained under Section 167(8) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The authorities have also announced a final deadline of February 10, 2025, for clearing outstanding dues.

DCP Traffic Virender Vij has instructed officials to ensure that vehicle owners in their jurisdictions are well-informed about this new enforcement measure.

This move aims to bring discipline to the city’s traffic system and encourage compliance with road safety norms.

90-Day Limit to Settle Traffic Challans

The Gurugram traffic police are cracking down on violators who have not cleared their dues on time. As per the latest directive, any driver who has been fined for breaking traffic laws must settle their challan within 90 days. If not, their vehicle will be seized.

This rule is being implemented under Section 167(8) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Traffic police officers will conduct vehicle inspections, and if they find unpaid challans beyond the 90-day limit, they will immediately take action.

February 10, 2025: Final Date for Old Challans

Authorities have given vehicle owners a strict deadline of February 10, 2025, to pay any outstanding challans. This is an opportunity for those who have not yet cleared their dues to avoid severe penalties.

DCP Vij has urged citizens to check their challan status online and make timely payments. The goal of this initiative is not just to penalize defaulters but also to streamline traffic management and ensure better road safety in the city.

Why Is This Action Being Taken?

Gurugram has witnessed a rise in unpaid traffic fines, which has made it difficult for authorities to enforce discipline on the roads. Many vehicle owners ignore challans, assuming they can get away without paying. This has led to an increase in reckless driving, jumping signals, and other traffic violations.

By implementing the vehicle detention policy, the traffic department hopes to:

  • Ensure better compliance with road rules

  • Reduce repeat offenses by penalizing habitual violators

  • Improve traffic flow and overall safety in Gurugram

  • Increase revenue collection from pending fines

Officials believe this move will make drivers more responsible and ensure they follow traffic laws more seriously.

How Will Vehicles Be Identified for Detention?

To enforce this rule, the traffic police will re-check vehicles during routine inspections. If a vehicle is found with a pending challan that has exceeded the 90-days limit, it will be detained on the spot.

Here’s how authorities will carry out inspections:

  • Checking records in the traffic database – Officers will have digital access to challan details and can instantly verify unpaid fines.

  • Stopping vehicles at checkpoints – Routine checks will be conducted at major intersections and highways.

  • Scanning license plates – With automated systems, police can quickly detect defaulters using CCTV surveillance and e-challan technology.

  • Using mobile applications – Traffic officers will scan vehicle numbers and check for pending payments using digital tools.

Once a vehicle is detained, the owner will be required to clear all outstanding fines before they can reclaim their vehicle. Additional penalties may also be imposed if the fine is delayed further.

What Happens If You Fail to Pay on Time?

If a driver does not clear their challan within 90 days, the following actions will be taken:

  • Vehicle Detention – The vehicle will be confiscated until all fines are cleared.

  • Additional Late Fees – Delayed payments may attract further penalties.

  • Legal Action – In extreme cases, habitual offenders could face legal consequences under traffic laws.

  • Driving License Suspension – If a driver has multiple unpaid challans, their license could be temporarily suspended.

How to Check and Pay Your Challan?

To avoid penalties, vehicle owners can check and pay their traffic challans online using the following methods:

  • Visit the official traffic police website – Most cities, including Gurugram, have dedicated portals where users can enter their vehicle numbers to check pending fines.

  • Use the Parivahan portal – The government’s Parivahan website allows users to track and pay traffic fines easily.

  • Mobile Apps – Some traffic departments offer apps where users can check their challan status and make instant payments.

  • Visit a traffic police station – If online payment is not an option, fines can be paid in person at designated traffic offices.

Public Response to the New Rule

As news of the new directive spreads, Gurugram residents have mixed reactions. While many support the move as a way to improve road safety, some vehicle owners feel it is too strict.

  • Supporters believe that stricter enforcement is necessary to prevent reckless driving and ensure better compliance. They argue that paying fines on time is a basic civic responsibility.

  • Opponents argue that detaining vehicles might cause inconvenience, especially for those who are unaware of their pending fines. Some also feel that the traffic police should issue reminders before taking such action.

Despite these concerns, the traffic police have made it clear that there will be no leniency. All vehicle owners are urged to check their challan status and clear dues before February 10, 2025.

The final Takeaway for everyone is to “Pay Your Dues” on Time! With the new rule in effect, Gurugram residents must take their traffic fines seriously.

If you have an outstanding challan, do not wait until the last minute, clear it before February 10, 2025, to avoid vehicle detention and legal trouble.

This initiative aims to bring discipline to the roads, reduce accidents, and encourage responsible driving. The traffic police have made it clear that rules are meant to be followed, and violations will not be ignored. So, if you have an unpaid challan, it’s time to settle it before it’s too late!
