Fangio's Legendary Mercedes W196 R Race Car Set for Auction
One of the most iconic Formula 1 race cars in history, the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R, is set to go under the hammer in February 2025. Known as the Stromlinienwagen, this car represents a golden era in motorsport and boasts a legacy intertwined with two of Formula 1's greatest drivers — Juan Manuel Fangio and Sir Stirling Moss.
The W 196 R made its debut at the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix, where Fangio piloted the Chassis No. 9 to a spectacular 1-2 victory. This legendary car closed its racing chapter on a high note at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix, where it claimed the top two podium spots with Moss securing a stunning finish.
In addition, it recorded the fastest lap time in the race, cementing its status as one of the most dominant vehicles of its time.
Mercedes-Benz originally produced 10 units of the W 196 R. While most were retained or donated to institutions like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation, the Chassis No. 9 now stands out as the only Stromlinienwagen ever offered to private collectors.
This particular model is one of just four examples to feature the streamlined bodywork, designed to maximize aerodynamics on high-speed circuits.
The RM Sotheby’s auction will mark a rare opportunity for collectors to own this piece of motorsport history. The auction house has estimated the car’s value to exceed €50 million, potentially making it the most expensive Formula 1 car ever sold.
