Citroen C5 Aircross EV Spied Testing: Fully-Electric SUV Nears Production Amid Stellantis Crisis

The automotive world is abuzz as Citroën's flagship SUV, the C5 Aircross, has been spied testing in its fully-electric avatar without any camouflage for the first time. This marks a significant milestone for Citroën as it transitions to an all-electric future despite facing financial challenges as part of the Stellantis conglomerate. The new Citroën C5 Aircross EV is seen as a bold step for the brand, highlighting its commitment to electric mobility, even as it contends with industry upheaval and market uncertainties.

Citroën’s Bold Move Amid Challenges

Citroën’s decision to develop a fully-electric C5 Aircross comes at a time when the company, like its parent group Stellantis, is grappling with a turbulent market. Stellantis, which was formed after the merger of PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, has been experiencing significant challenges. Citroën, one of Stellantis' flagship brands, recently announced its exit from Australia, where it had been operating for over 100 years, signaling tough times ahead.

Yet, amidst these difficulties, Citroën remains committed to its future in electric powertrains, demonstrating resilience by moving ahead with its new electric C5 Aircross. The decision to electrify its premium SUV range comes at a crucial moment, and Citroën appears ready to embrace the electric revolution fully.

Spied Testing

The Citroën C5 Aircross EV test mule was spotted in Southern Europe, where it has been seen undergoing what appear to be final stages of testing. This electric version has nearly identical bodywork to the current C5 Aircross Hybrid model, a clever disguise designed to mask the vehicle's true identity. However, a closer look reveals key differences that strongly suggest this is the much-anticipated electric variant.

The absence of an exhaust system, which is present on both the C5 Aircross Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), is a clear indication of its electric credentials. Moreover, a large battery pack protruding from the undercarriage, which stretches across the vehicle’s wheelbase, further confirms that this is no hybrid. Instead, it's a fully electric vehicle, likely equipped with a high-capacity battery capable of significant range.

What to Expect from the Citroën C5 Aircross EV

Citroën's electric C5 Aircross will be based on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform, which is shared by several other electric vehicles under the Stellantis umbrella. This platform is known for its versatility and scalability, supporting various powertrains and battery configurations. The C5 Aircross EV is expected to feature an 86 kWh battery pack, providing up to 500 kilometers of range on a single charge, which is in line with competitors such as the Peugeot E-3008 and Opel Grandland Electric.

Visually, the electric version of the C5 Aircross will remain largely unchanged from its hybrid counterpart. Citroën seems to be taking a conservative approach with exterior updates, opting instead to focus on under-the-hood improvements. While the exact details of the interior remain unclear, it's likely that the cabin will carry over much of the design and technology found in the current model, ensuring a premium feel for drivers and passengers alike.

A Crucial Player in Citroën’s Lineup

The C5 Aircross is Citroën’s largest and most important SUV, particularly in the premium segment. The move to electrify this model demonstrates Citroën’s recognition of the growing importance of electric vehicles (EVs) in the global automotive market. Although the brand has faced declining sales in recent years, the C5 Aircross EV could help Citroën regain traction, especially in regions where electrification is rapidly becoming the norm.

Given the increasing competition in the EV market, the C5 Aircross EV will be essential in positioning Citroën as a serious player in the electric SUV space. The brand has already made strides with its C3 and C3 Aircross models, and the fully-electric C5 Aircross is set to solidify Citroën’s commitment to sustainable, zero-emission transportation.

Limited Launch Markets

Despite the global push for electrification, the Citroën C5 Aircross EV is not expected to launch in all markets. It is highly unlikely to arrive in India, where the C5 Aircross PHEV and Hybrid models have faced limited success. Instead, Citroën will likely focus on key regions such as Europe, where the demand for electric SUVs is strongest.

A Glimpse Into the Future

Citroën's move towards electrifying its flagship SUV represents a significant step in the brand's journey towards a more sustainable future. Despite financial challenges and uncertain market conditions, the development of the fully-electric Citroën C5 Aircross shows the brand’s determination to remain relevant in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape. If the final production model delivers on its promises, the C5 Aircross EV could become a crucial player in Citroën's resurgence.

As the world shifts towards electric mobility, the Citroën C5 Aircross EV could be the vehicle that helps Citroën not only survive but thrive in the age of electrification.
